Instructions on How To Use This Wall: Tell Your Truth, Shame the Devil.

My mother used to tell me, "Tell the truth, shame the devil." I always thought she was telling me not to lie or I would go to hell.

Not until recently did I fully understand the meaning of this saying. When we speak our truths, we move into a place of power. We are no longer ashamed or fearful because we own our truths. Those who mean to shame us, instead, find themselves in need of self-reflection.

We black people are often told "get over the past." This means:

Get over slavery,

Get over segregation under Jim and Jane Crow,

Get over redlining and housing discrimination,

Get over disenfranchisement and strict voter i.d. laws.

Get over employment and income disparities.

Get over the wealth gap.

Get over mass incarceration.

Get over disparities in racial profiling and state sanctioned violence against members of the black community.

Get over being victims.

Get over trauma.

According to psychologists, trauma is not something one can "get over." It is not as easy as shaking it off and waking up to a world where all lives, including black lives, make a difference.

We are unwilling to "feel some kind of way" about what has happened to us or to someone we love. Because of our history, we have pulled away from our communal pain. We don't speak publicly about our personal experiences of injustice, pain, or trauma. We have learned how to protect our spirits by shielding ourselves from unpleasantness. We have developed callouses around the thin surfaces of loving and desiring to be loved. We are getting physically sick from the stress of "tucking our stuff away."

Imagine if each of us had the power to make a difference. Imagine if we could create conversations, communities, and committed action in our lives, in our work, and in our online presence.

If and when we are willing to name our pain and our trauma, our truths can bring important awareness to the disparities in how we are treated and in how we perceive inequity and injustice in our personal daily lives. I'm building this board so that we can share our truths about our experiences, unedited and uncut. We need to share our experiences to get it out of us and into the light. We can't have reconciliation until we tell our truth.*

I am a teacher at heart and I realized that the most productive thing I could do in this moment in our country is to offer to create a safe space of dialogue. I am asking you to use this wall to share, to name, to witness, to listen, to acknowledge, and affirm each other.

Here are some instructions on how to tell your truth on this wall:

Watch the padlet tour if you haven't used this site before.

In the bottom right corner is a bright fuchsia button with a "+" in it. Use it to create your own post.

You can write, post a video, post audio, or post a link to a blog or an article that you think the community will benefit from.

You can read posts from others who have shared their truths.

You can share this Padlet on your social media networks and invite others to write on this wall.

My hope is that this will grow into something so big that it will be difficult to turn away. Our single stories have been written off as isolated incidents, probably due to something we did wrong. But, together, we tell a story of a pattern of abuse and mistreatment that goes beyond mere statistics.

Include your voice. However you choose to express it.

Share your email on Speaking of Blackness. You will hear from me about upcoming resources to get information.

I look forward to see what the end will be.

Sarita McCoy Gregory, Ph.D.

*Unless you show up with some unproductive, unenlightened, or offensive post. There's is no room on this wall for any of that.
