Angelou uses rock, river, and tree as objects that have been present since the beginning of history, practically eternal, "hosts to species long since departed." The rock can take the role of Earth, while the river takes the role of a singer, and the tree is the one who speaks to humankind. The start of the poem uses the image of dinosaurs to represent an old way of thinking, then moves on with the river which represents the flow of progress with President Bill Clinton now in office.
