I would say I am somewhere in the middle of task-oriented and relationship-oriented, with a splash of democratic. :) Is that fair?? I think it depends what situation we are talking about. It is a different scenario for leadership among my students vs. with my colleagues.
~Laura

1) Relationship- oriented leadership
2) Democratic leadership

If I am understanding this correctly, relationship-oriented leadership is when you want everyone to be happy and be a part of the decision making process. The relationships of the people involved in the decision-making process are the forefront and priority of the leader.
Democratic leaders practice social equality by having members of their group give input in the decision making process while keeping the best interest of everyone in mind.
~Laura

I want to think I use a relationship-oriented style of leadership with my grade level team. I view us as all equals and feel everyone's opinions and voices should be heard. Whereas I may use more of a democratic leadership when talking about things such as PLC's, negotiations, etc. In these situations I am promoting the best interest of our staff and union, while giving everyone a chance to have input.
~Laura

I think I try to use transformational leadership. I really like to have a vision that has the purpose for change in mind. I want to make things easier or more efficient and technology has been good to me. With transformational leadership a part is managing implementation successfully. I really was one of the first teachers to use google to help make my classroom more efficient. Without google I would have never been able to reflect on my teaching and make structural changes. - Jon Frykman

Leadership Styles- Jon Frykman

Democratic and task orientated are more of what I would say I would use. I really don't think any teacher is above the other so autocratic leadership style never goes over well. The problem with democratic is people have to voice their own opinions and have to be confident. And teachers don't want to have to do extra work for the task master. So after reading what leadership styles there are, we have to take parts of each and work them into our own leadership style. I think relationship orientated is always a goal but sometimes that also gets in the way of the overall goal. Sometimes decisions are not going to be for the good of the group.

Context-Jon Frykman

I explained what I thought of the styles but in a plain context might be easier to explain. I always had a hard time with consensus in my groups. There are voice-truss people, shy people, roller coaster people, and long processors- like me. So consensus was always difficult for me early on in my leadership. I got more democratic and start to throw out all kinds of ideas or scenarios and let my people pick. If the idea came from someone in the group then I could use those ideas to call little votes into the group. So a democratic approach worked for me. I had to have a very organized and focused meeting in order to get this done though. After reading about the leaderships styles I think I worried about consensus too much.
