Before becoming a teacher, I used to work as financial analyst in the banking sector. Sometimes I tell my students what my former jobs consisted of and show them some easy examples of financial applications, such as capital and interest gain, amortising plans, risk modelling etc. Moreover I try to teach them how to check that statistic reports are complete and reliable.
Students are usually quite unaware of how the baking sector actually works. Therefore they are normally surprised as they discover that a higher knowledge of Maths can help them avoid frauds.

No matter where you work in the World, there will be some Geometry. Most jobs will use Geometry somewhere in the work that is done. People who make jewellery need to know a lot about Geometry. When diamonds are cut into shapes, there are specific geometric patterns that need to be followed. Fashion Designers need to have a good understanding of geometry and measurement to make clothes that enhance the human body, but can be broken down into parts which can be cut out of patterns.I always try to explain to my students that math is everywhere!

We do invite various professionals like for example a meteorologist to talk to the boys about the weather but never emaphsized this aspect of Maths but after this course I am sure that I will change my approach. For my students to understand the importance of mathematics in everyday life, I have been looking for meetings with parents of different professions, economists, engineers, vaporens, etc. by inviting them to classroom or by organizing excursions to their workplaces or visiting museums where I also worked out workshops. To make maths appealing, I organized meetings with experts. For example, to explain the importance of alternative energies, we went to visit a solar power plant. Here students met engineers, chemists, and computer scientists. My students were very interested and at the end they asked what skills they needed to do those jobs. Experts answered: study math!

This year one of my classes will partecipate to a project of prevention of pathological gambling and the main instrument is the probability theory. I think this way to introduce Probability will be very promising, as far as regard students comprehension of the Maths that is behind gambling and also as far as regard their understanding that Maths is really pervasive in our life and that is a very powerful instrument to judge and to understand reality.

Last year when my students were learning about measures, apart from showing them real scales, thermometers, rulers etc. I was also explaining to them why it isimportant in occupations. For example I remember talking about imaginative visit to a tailor ordering a dress. If a tailor can't take measure well, you won't get a dress that fits. In other words a tailor has to know how to calculate with meters, centimeters, millimeters and how to be very precise in measuring.

I think that we can show with our enthusiasm in teaching Maths what was that fascinated us.
We need to show that Maths is not only calculation, but reasoning and logic and problem solving. These are the competences they'll really need and use in many jobs.
Some students love Maths because there is always a right answer, some others hate it for the same reason. If we teach them that they are allowed to make mistakes as long as they are trying to follow their reasoning, the ansiety about this subject will be less and much more will be eager to continue studying Maths.

I never though of inviting a professional to my Math class, but it would be a interesting thing to experiment. I talked sometimes about my thesis for my university degree: since I majored in Physics, my work was all about applying Math to a real-world case.
I'm an Environmental Physics, working with natural phenomena and pollution, in particular I specialized in Geophysics, so I usually show them some of the jobs I could had done if I hadn't became a Math and Physics teacher: a weather forecaster, or an economics and financial market forecaster (it's incredible that the skills required are the same and I actually did get a job proposal for that), an anti-pollution expert, a technician who studies were to drill wells for water or petroleum ( my thesis was on the drilling of water wells on coastal regions), an expert for quakes, a programmer for a software-house and so on. More important to that: there were many proposal from the economical and financial market, because of the Math skills I could guarantee with my degree; the fact that I knew close to nothing in regard to Economics wasn't seen as a problem (!).

In order to motivate my students to continue studing maths, from time to time i call some experts to my class or via skype to explain the wai they work the nature of their job and the math problems they have to solve. Once last year we called a paintworker and he explained how he calculates the amount of paint he buys when he paints a house and the way he calculates the price he asks. All students were amazed because they thought that maths wasn't necessary for him to know maths.

I always tell my students that Maths is constantly present in our life and we need to solve problems everyday.
For this reason, to motivate my students to continue studying Maths I could invite a farmer to my Maths class. He could explain them how he calculates the quantity of food his animal need, how many liter of milk he can obtain from a cow or a donkey, how much a liter of milk costs and how he can calculate his earnings.
I could invite a cook too. he could explain how he use the units measurement of mass to do his recipes.

We occasionally invite professionals to our school but I prefer to visit the actual work places of these professionals with my students and, if possible, to perform an authentic task with them. For example, my class observes in situ a land surveyor or a civil engineer calculating the area of a square field, a circle plaza or a triangle building lot and keeping notes of these geometrical shapes in their sketchpad or computer. Then pupils are expected to follow suit while working as a team and using the same tools (e.g. measuring tape) and techniques.

Due to the fact that the school where I work is located in a rural environment, most of the locals are farming as a means of living. Last year in World Space Week i invited Dr. Mário Lino da Silva for a lecture. The theme was "Let's talk about Space"
Using an accessible language for the youngest, Doctor Mário Lino da Silva spoke of Space in three themes:

1) Observation of Space: Look at Heaven, there are more stars in Heaven than grains of sand on Earth. What can we distinguish looking at the sky with the naked eye? How to use telescopes and radio telescopes to find out more about Space. The relative distances and sizes of the various planets of the Solar System

2) Exploration of Space: To go to Space we use rockets. How do they work? (Principle of the reaction-action, a balloon is used to demonstrate). How is a space mission from take-off to landing? What kind of rockets are there? (Presentation of scale models).

3) Space in day-to-day: How Space influences our day to day life. The GPS in the car that tells us where we should go. Meteorology, we know what time it will do tomorrow thanks to the satellites. I think that one way to motivate students with Math is not to say right away they are wrong (even when they are) we have to allow them to really think, develop and explain their thinking process, I found that almost all of the times when they do it they find the mistake by themselves. In my school most of the students are specialized in IT, so it is obvious that they need to study Maths. I do not need to invite certain professions to the classes as the IT teachers are there to show them the importance of Maths. For example, if they want to be programmers, the university education is based on Maths. Most of our IT teachers are professionals in the field, so they can share some first-hand experience with the students. Some students are interested in advanced Maths, so there are specific faculty classes where we prepare them for the university studies as we teach them the advanced parts, e.g. calculus. In IT programming lessons they need to use their Maths skills to perform well.

The other field that our students study in is electronics, which uses mostly Physics, but if they want to do well in that, they also need Maths to accomplish their studies

I teach in a middle school, my students are between the ages of 11 and 13. They are attracted to many things, especially computer technology and video games. I have never invited any professional in my class, but I find it a great idea not only to make them understand how math is present in all aspects of real life but also to orient them in future study choices. For more advanced/older students, fractal images can be a very good motivation do study Maths in depth. I can show them beautiful pictures of "fractal art" and clarify how simple fractals arise. Students can find a lot of fractal patterns in nature, even they can invent their own fractal patterns.

I teach Maths in high school and I can say it isn't so easy to explain the Maths for everyone. They ask me very often : why do I need this? or Where I will use this formula. My answer is: The Maths is the gymnastic of your brain. It can make you organized and able to take good decision and to make a difference between choices. A very nice example is when you bring to the students statistics for political parties, or general statistics and you have to "read" the graph, make assumptions for a bigger amount of people, try to find out the statistical error and generally think how people who work in statistic companies think or apply maths

Usually midlle school students do not know well that mathematics is necessary for certain professional carreers. For exemple, most like ttechonoly and working with computers but when I tell them i tis necessary to study maths they are surprised!!

I think this is an excellent way to try and get students to see the importance of math, not because they will all be weather forecasters but instead because there are many jobs that involve math but students don’t know it involves math or they don’t understand the level of math yet to realize how important a basis in math would be (examples like pilots, engineers, nurses come to mind) I also have lots of students interested in computer programming and game design and so I like to explain to them how much math is involved in this and how a higher understanding of math and programming would help them create more complex games.

The Tourism and Hospitality industry’s work with tourists, so they need to make several calculations of currency conversions. Statistical surveys are also important to find out the number of tourists per country or state, or the number of people who have traveled in certain months, to certain destiny. They also use many calculations with percentages, for example calculate discounts or calculate occupancy percentage of hotel rooms. The same is true for food: for example, if the hotel is 50% occupied, they only need to purchase half of the food that would be bought in the case of full occupancy, avoiding unnecessary expenses and waste of food.

Two years as part of my school's involvement in MASCIL, a research on Maths, we invited at our schools an energy supervisor. My class got involved in a project trying to determine how we could save on energy, exploring aspects such as the orientation of the school, the surface of the windows, the money spend on bulbs and on electricity. In my classes when we start with a topic I try to show students what they are worth in real life. For example, when I teach statistics I talk about people who work at the national statistical institute and what they do there. I talk about real surveys they run and I show the form used. So, even if I tell them that maths is very important in most areas, they are not motivated because they see no real intrinsic need for them to study math. I teach in a primary school, so my students are too young to think about their future. I think that students have difficulty imagining themselves as scientists because they see scientists as strange or anomalous people. I try to teach my students that they can be everything they want to be. They only have to choose the things that make them happy. I try to show them that math and science are interesting fields and that there still is a lot to be discovered. My students have to choose in the 8th grade the field/profile they will study in high school. So it`s important for them to understand what they want to become.

My personal experience is that last year I invited an expert on fiscal matters who, after delivering some lectures on how to become professional accountant, offered my 5th class students the opportunity to attend a 40 hours internship at his firm that deals with providing fiscal assistance to people. The objective was, training and getting ready for their future study and/or work environment as per our Italian107 law Alternanza scuola-lavoro i.e. school and work turnover. Well, it was a really challenging experience and it was, of course, the first step. The guys assisted expert accountants while they were adding amounts to some accounts and subtracting amounts from other accounts to increase or reduce balances. They also assisted the trainers computing financial ratios, including margins, leverage and liquidity ratios, asset turnover ratio and debt-to-equity. These ratio calculations involved the use of multiplication and division.Without the students' basical arithmetic skills, however, the project would have been a failure, while the students performed very well but ...of course they still have a lot to learn!....

We have arranged parents occupation day.
Its a programmed day in which the parent of each syudent van come into our class and present his/her job to the pupils. Parent answers children s questions and gives details about the studies , skills ect that are needed for his/her job

I always tell my students that Maths is constantly present in our life and we need to solve problems everyday.
For this reason, to motivate my students to continue studying Maths I could invite a farmer grandfather to my Maths class. He could explain them how he calculates the quantity of food his animal need, how many liter of milk he can obtain from a cow or a donkey, how much a liter of milk costs and how he can calculate his earnings.
I could invite their dad cook too. he could explain how he use the units measurement of mass to do his recipes.

Inspired by this course this year, in my 5th grade class, we'll have a competition about projecting a zoo cage (we have a zoo in our town). Three architect will come in our class and explain their job to the students.
With the class we have recently have a discussion about how the world would be without math and what jobs wouldn't exist anymore. The children were really impressed and start to look at math in a different way.

Two years ago we run a project about "Natural and Artificial Lighting Conditions in Classrooms". That intervention concerned the investigation of the factors related to the artificial lighting of the class (adequate illumination, lamp characteristics and performance, energy consumption, lighting costs) in order to link the teaching of mathematics to situations related to the everyday life of pupils and their awareness on issues of saving natural resources and energy. In order to solve the problem “how could we control good Natural and Artificial Lighting Conditions in Classrooms conditions?” we invited an electrical engineer Energy Inspector. He explained to us “What kind of mathematics does he use in his work to make valid checks?”

Students need to find a connection with real world to be motivated.
So, when I introduce a new topic, I try to begin with a real problem and to explain them that maths is everywhere and that it is useful to understand the real world.
This year I'm teaching in the 3rd and the 4th classes and I'm experiencing the Simulated Enterprise that offers many sparks for maths.

Some examples I use at the level I teach (13 years old):

Scientific notation and astronomers.

Percentages and shops, specially in sales period.

Ratio and proportion and photographers.

Directly proportional distributions and politicians (when assigning seats after an election).

Tables and charts and journalists.

Statistics and psychologists or doctors.

Measurements and estimations and artisans.

But I have to admit that I never invited any of them to my classroom.
