Township Rebellion - This song was written during a time with plenty of political unrest by many Americans. It's about fighting White Supremacy, and going against the system. White supremacy is a strong factor in America, it's just much more hidden, now. It pushes many immigrants and Americans, many of whom are non-white, to be forced into lower income, lower quality areas. The lyrics focus about it, saying lyrics such as, "Why stand on a silent platform, fight the war, F the norm!", that help reinforce the thesis. Another lyric, " When ignorance reigns, life is lost," it shows how the stagnation of American society leads to people dying and being forced to not be able to live the American Dream.

This clip clearly demonstrates how the American Dream is dead. A man who has a dead-end job and an unemployed wife, with a son with a disability, he's barely holding on as it is. He now has to live the last few years of his life in misery, and spend thousands on treatment, all the while the pressure of knowing he's going to die soon. It leads this man to a life of crime, and manufacturing crystal meth. The show also showcases many drug addicts, failed by America and sell and use drugs because they can't do much else. It shows how the American Dream is dead, because it describes a family who has to commit crime to get by because of America's failures, as well as the people who have been left behind by the United States.

Chapter 6 of Of Mice and Men

Chapter 5 of Of Mice and Men helps explain how the American Dream has been dead for a long time. "Now Candy spoke his greatest fear. 'You an' me can get that little place, can't we, George? You an' me can go there an' live nice, can't we, George?' Before George answered, Candy dropped his head and looked down at the hay. He knew"(Steinbeck 94). To add some context to this, Candy and George just discovered a dead body, and know who's done it. They're both, however, obsessed with reaching their American Dream. They don't even care about the dead body, at first, they care more about living off "the fatta the land." Despite this, like millions of Americans, they can't achieve their goals, despite doing everything right. Candy and George did everything right, but a force out of their control prevented them from achieving anything, explaining well that the American Dream has been dead for well over a century, even if it's because of different reasons.

This link helps explain how the American Dream is dead. It goes into perspective about some of the major issues that have recently plagued America and the chance to rise above. For example, the author, Solo Ceesay, writes about credit card debts, saying, "American households currently hold $11.67 trillion in debt - a 25% increase from the $9.31 trillion they held before COVID-19" (Ceesay). This explains fully about how people are so stuck in debt that they could never be able to climb their way out. Another piece of evidence is about the cost of living increasing wildly, explaining, "In 2021, we say YoY inflation jump from 1.4% in 2020 to a blistering 7% - the steepest increase in YoY inflation since 1950, when we saw a delta of 8%. A year later, 2022 YoY inflation held strong at 6.5%, signaling a slight improvement...However, little evidence points to any impending meaningful increases, with wage growth holding relatively steady between 5 and 5.5% since the beginning of 2021" (Ceesay). This helps explain how many Americans simply cannot afford to live in the world that's being shaped, let alone from the people at the lower class.

Interview

I decided to interview my mommy to talk about her American Dream. She started off by talking about how the American Dream can be anything you want. The American Dream symbolizes achievement and success, but that's just her perspective on it. When she was younger, she wanted to either become a lawyer or a teacher, and she got to fulfill her dream, by becoming a teacher. It was brought onto her by her upbringing, specifically her mother and her older siblings. When talking about if the American Dream is realistic, however, she said, "“So, do I think it’s obtainable? With a great deal of sacrifice, but I don’t think it’s obtainable for everybody, right now. If you do everything right, study hard, go to school, and go to a job that you think you could sustain, but when you get out you’re in over $100,000 in debt, and you’re not able to support yourself, or anyone else.” Despite teaching about the United States for AP classes, she still believes that the American Dream is crippled and America does not help support the right people to help achieve their dream.
