We all know the popular name of Leonardo Dicaprio from famous movies such as “The Titanic” and “The Great Gatsby”. Despite all the love Dicaprio received from fans, he decided to take a break so he could focus on improving the environment. The Leonardo Dicaprio Foundation was made in 1998. It protects the Earth’s last wild places by pressing environmental humanitarian issues through grants, campaigning, and media projects. He also made a movie called “The 11th Hour”, which explains the state that the Earth is currently in. Leo is serving on the board of World Wildlife Fund, Natural Resources Defense Council, International Fund for Animal Welfare, and Global Green USA.

Quote (Emerson, The Complete Works )

Emerson states, “The happiest man is he who learns from nature the lesson of worship.” This quote is explaining how those who are truly the happiest and most fulfilled in life are those closest to nature. In Dicaprio’s life, he demonstrates this by choosing to take time away from acting to be with nature. Money and fame are something this world tends to put a lot of value on. By picking nature over money and fame, Leonardo shows us just how important nature is him.

In the 2010 Karate Kid film, Jaden Smith, known as Dre in the film, had many moments of trusting his gut over logic. In the last scene of the movie, Dre is competing against his biggest competitor in the championship of the big karate match. His competitor is dirty and breaks Dre’s leg on purpose. Yet, Dre trusts himself that he can get through the pain and win the match. He stands up, uses a very uncommon tatic, and takes down his rival. Instead of using the same moves, he does a snake like move by staring right at his competitor. There was no way of possibly knowing that Dre’s approach to the last match would work, but he was confident in himself and showed others that he could win.

Emerson explains, “Trust instinct to the end, even though you can’t give a reason.” This quote is saying to trust your gut feeling at all times, even if it isn’t the most logical choice. Although you may not have an explanation for why you made that decision, always stay true to your instincts. In Karate Kid, Dre clearly shows this when he chooses which moves to use while competing. He may of not chose what seemed most logical, but he trusted his gut and won the match.

Many would agree that the first Jungle Book movie is much different then the most recent one made in 2016. Although this may be true, there is one thing both films have in common: simplified living. Mowgli, the main character in the movie, is a boy who lives in the Jungle. He lives off of nature with no contact with the human world. He uses things such as sticks and leaves to help him get his food and to sleep on.

Quote (Thoreau, Walden)

Thoreau says, “Our life is frittered away by detail. Simplify, simplify.” Thoreau is explaining that we spend our days obsessing over material objects, such as phones and cars. Because we do this, we don’t see the beauty of the world and how simple life can really be. In the Jungle Book, Mowgli doesn’t spend anytime with outside objects and is connected with nature. He uses objects from nature to help him survive. Because he can live without any help from the outside world, his life is made out to be much simpler than the average human.

The Fosters is an family drama series that first aired on ABC in 2013. It tells the story of Callie, a teenager who is placed in a foster home with a lesbian couple and their kids, some who are biological and some who were adoptive. This type of scenario is anything but normal. Not often do you see a lesbian couple presented in a popular television show. To add to it, they have kids from three different biological parents. Throughout the whole series, changes and events happen that you wouldn’t expect. The creators of this show do a good job using non-conformity to guide each episode.

Thoreau states, “Rather than love, then money, then fame, give me truth.” This quote is telling people to seek simple lives of gratitude and truth over their desires for wealth or fame. The Fosters represents this by going their own direction rather then choosing something that everyone else does. They could of chose to make a reality show or something more popular. Instead, they went their own direction and made it work.

LiAngelo Ball, the son of famous businessman and media personality LaVar Ball, was found guilty of theft allegations in China in 2017. LiAngelo was currently a freshman basketball player at the University of California Los Angeles. Once returning to the states, Ball was told he would have to sit out several games because of his actions. LiAngelo decided this was not going to work for him and pulled himself out of college. He individually decided that he didn’t need that scholarship and started on his own path. LaVar agreed with his son's decision and even went far enough to tell ESPN, “I’m going to make him way better for the draft then UCLA ever could have.” LiAngelo later went on to play overseas for a professional team.

According to Emerson, “You will always find those who think they know what is your duty better than you know it.” Emerson is explaining how there will always be people you meet that will try to run your life for you. They will tell you they know best and will help you make decisions for your life. Emerson wants to veer away from this thinking and lead people to be self-reliant. Instead of letting those people control the way you live, make your own decisions. When LaVar pulled himself out of college, there were hundreds of people who disagreed with his decision. He didn't let those haters change what he had in mind. Instead, he stuck with his decision and turned out to be very successful. He strongly represents what a self-reliant person looks like.
