Jews who are kosher can’t eat pork or shellfish or mix milk in meat products. During major holy days , work is not allowed and traditional jews avoid activities such as writing and driving. Some jews today don’t follow all these things though. During this special day Jews put aside work and everyday concerns, other holidays celebrate more of jewish history. Another Jewish holiday/ celebration is Passover. Passover is the celebration of God rescuing israelites from slavery in Egypt. Passover is a 7 day celebration that usually takes place between March and April. Family members gather for a special meal and read special sacred religious text. One tradition of passover is to eat unrisen bread called matzah. They eat Matzah because the Israelites left so quickly that there was no time for the bread to rise before baking it. Another Jewish holiday is Rosh Hashanah (ROHSH-hah-SHAN-nah) This holiday celebrates the Jewish New Year. This holiday usually falls in September or October. Rosh Hashanah is celebrated by blowing a rams horn during a prayer service to symbolize to “wake up”. People think about how they could lead better lives, a traditional food is apples and honey. One more very important holiday is Yom Kippur (YOHM ki-POOR).  Yom Kippur is known as the day of Atonement and is the most dignified holiday. It marks the end of the Ten days of Repentance when Jews ask for forgiveness from others and god. People spend that day praying and fasting, a rams horn is blown to mark the end of the fast.  A jewish day begins at sunset and ends the next evening.
