Antidepressants Do Not Necessarily Worsen Dementia
by Lee Ji-yul

With the aging of the global population, the number of individuals living with dementia has more than tripled since 1990, making a closer examination of commonly prescribed medications in elderly care long overdue. Depression, one of the most prevalent mental health disorders among older adults, is frequently associated with cognitive impairment. Consequently, the widespread use of antidepressants has prompted an important question: do these drugs exacerbate dementia? While this issue requires careful study, an increasing body of scientific evidence indicates that antidepressants are not a cause of cognitive decline. On the contrary, appropriate antidepressant therapy is essential for maintaining mental stability and may even contribute to preserving brain health.

The misconception that antidepressants worsen dementia largely stems from confusion between correlation and causation. Although certain observational studies have reported an association between antidepressant use and dementia, such findings do not establish a direct causal link. In fact, many well-designed clinical trials identify depression itself as a major risk factor—and in some cases an early symptom—of dementia. Chronic, untreated depression elevates cortisol levels, damages the hippocampus, and accelerates neuronal loss, all of which impair cognitive function. Therefore, the observed connection is more likely attributable to the underlying vulnerability of patients with depression rather than the pharmacological effects of antidepressant medications. From this perspective, the effective treatment of depression is protective—not harmful—to cognitive health.

Furthermore, emerging research suggests that some classes of antidepressants may even exert neuroprotective effects. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), the most commonly prescribed antidepressants, regulate serotonin activity in the central nervous system. Serotonin plays a vital role not only in mood regulation but also in memory formation, learning processes, and neurogenesis—the formation of new neurons. Experimental studies, including those conducted with animal models, have demonstrated that SSRIs may reduce neuroinflammation and the accumulation of amyloid-beta plaques—two key pathological features of Alzheimer’s disease. Thus, when appropriately administered, antidepressants can both alleviate depressive symptoms and strengthen neural resilience.

Large-scale longitudinal studies further reinforce this conclusion. Analyses of patient data across multiple countries have consistently found no increased risk of dementia among long-term antidepressant users compared to non-users. A 2021 meta-analysis published in Frontiers in Pharmacology synthesized results from numerous studies and reported no statistically significant relationship between antidepressant use and the onset of dementia. Notably, the same study found that patients who achieved remission from depression performed better on cognitive assessments over time. This suggests that the preservation of cognition is more closely associated with the successful treatment of depression than with the avoidance of antidepressant medication.

In conclusion, concerns that antidepressants exacerbate dementia are not supported by the current weight of scientific evidence. Instead, research reveals a more nuanced and optimistic picture: it is the untreated depressive disorder, rather than the medication itself, that poses the greater threat to cognitive health. When carefully prescribed and monitored, antidepressants remain a vital tool for protecting both emotional and cognitive well-being in older adults. Rather than discouraging their use, clinicians and caregivers should prioritize accurate diagnosis, individualized dosage, and continuous monitoring—key strategies for preserving brain health and improving quality of life in an aging world.

Beyond Public Education: The advantage of Private Tutoring

Beyond Public Education: The Advantages of Private Tutoring

by Seo Yoona

“Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world,” Nelson Mandela once said. In Korea, both public and private education play crucial roles in shaping students’ futures. While public education provides equal learning opportunities for all, it often struggles to address differences in students’ learning pace, individual needs, and exam preparation. Therefore, private tutoring serves as a valuable supplement to public education, offering personalized instruction, fostering self-directed learning, and effectively preparing students for college entrance exams.

First, private tutoring provides customized instruction tailored to each student’s learning level and pace. In contrast, public schools follow standardized curricula designed for large groups, which makes it difficult to meet individual needs. Private education, however, focuses on a student’s strengths and weaknesses, providing in-depth lessons for struggling learners and advanced materials for high achievers. According to education researcher Jang Hee-won, participation in private education, including time and investment, is strongly correlated with academic achievement in Korea—unlike in many OECD countries. This evidence suggests that individualized attention through private tutoring can effectively close learning gaps and enhance academic performance.

Second, private education enhances students’ self-directed learning abilities. Unlike classroom learning, which often relies on teacher instruction, private tutoring encourages students to take responsibility for their study habits. Tutors often provide structured study plans, regular tests, and feedback, which help students develop discipline and independence. Over time, these practices nurture the ability to learn autonomously—an essential skill for lifelong learning and future academic success. Thus, private tutoring not only supports short-term academic improvement but also builds long-term learning competence.

Third, private tutoring offers practical advantages in preparing for competitive college entrance exams. In Korea, where university admission is highly valued, access to accurate and timely information can significantly influence a student’s success. Private institutes and tutors provide detailed analyses of past exams, personalized strategies, and real-time updates about admission trends—resources that public schools may not always offer. This allows students and parents to make more informed decisions and optimize their preparation for specific university goals.

In conclusion, while public education remains the foundation of Korea’s learning system, it cannot fully address every student’s individual needs or ensure adequate preparation for college entrance exams. Private tutoring complements public education by offering personalized instruction, strengthening self-directed learning, and equipping students with strategic exam preparation. Although private education has its disadvantages, such as cost and accessibility, it remains an effective tool for overcoming the limitations of public education and supporting students’ academic growth. When balanced wisely, the combination of public and private education can create a more equitable and effective learning environment for all.

Euthanasia and Physician-Assisted Suicide: A Case for Compassionate Choice

by Park Jay

When a person faces unbearable pain at the end of life, shouldn’t they have the right to choose a peaceful death? Euthanasia refers to the practice of intentionally ending a person’s life to relieve intractable suffering. Some people view it as an act of mercy and compassion, while others argue that it is morally wrong to intentionally end a life. However, allowing euthanasia respects individuals’ right to make decisions about their own lives, provides relief from unbearable suffering, and enables society to use medical resources more meaningfully.

First, euthanasia respects patient autonomy by allowing individuals to make decisions about their own body and life. Every person should have the right to determine what happens to them, even in their final moments. It is inhumane to compel someone to continue enduring pain when they no longer wish to suffer. For patients with terminal illnesses, choosing euthanasia can bring a sense of dignity and control during a time of helplessness. Respecting this choice demonstrates genuine acknowledgment of human freedom and the right to self-determination.

Second, euthanasia provides a compassionate means of relieving unbearable suffering that medicine cannot fully address. Despite significant medical advancements, some patients continue to face constant pain and hopelessness with no possibility of recovery. For them, euthanasia represents an act of mercy rather than cruelty. It allows individuals to end their pain peacefully and on their own terms. By offering this option, society shows empathy and compassion toward those who suffer most deeply, reaffirming that humane care includes the right to die with dignity.

Finally, legalizing euthanasia can reduce unnecessary medical expenses and allow for more effective allocation of healthcare resources. When hospitals spend less on treatments that cannot improve a patient’s condition, they can devote more time, funding, and attention to patients with a realistic chance of recovery. This approach not only reduces economic strain but also enhances the overall quality and fairness of medical care. In this sense, euthanasia can contribute to a more balanced and ethical healthcare system that benefits society as a whole.

In conclusion, euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide uphold human dignity by respecting personal autonomy, relieving unbearable suffering, and promoting the ethical use of medical resources. Far from being an act of cruelty, euthanasia can be an expression of compassion and respect for human choice. Allowing individuals the right to a peaceful and dignified death affirms the values of empathy, freedom, and humane care that every modern society should strive to protect.

Should Human Gene Editing Be Allowed? (Pro)

By LeeSungEun

In a technology class, there was a presentation about stem cell research and the ethical debates around using embryonic stem cells. Like stem cell research, human gene editing also raises questions about life and ethics. The implementation of human gene editing should be authorized, given its potential to eradicate genetic disorders, promote scientific advancement, and elevate the quality of human life.

First, human gene editing can eradicate serious genetic disorders. If scientists fix DNA errors before birth, diseases such as cystic fibrosis or muscular dystrophy could be prevented. Families would no longer need to experience pain or spend large amounts of money on lifelong treatments. This shows that gene editing can bring relief and hope to millions of people.

Second, gene editing promotes scientific advancement. It helps researchers discover new ways to treat incurable diseases, like cancer or Alzheimer’s. Moreover, studying edited genes can improve our understanding of how the human body works.

Beyond Automation: The Irreplaceable Role of Humans in the Age of AI

Only a small portion of core job tasks—less than 10%—can actually be performed better using AI. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has developed rapidly and become a major part of industries such as healthcare, finance, and customer service. Most AI today is classified as Narrow AI, meaning it can complete specific tasks efficiently but lacks general intelligence or emotional awareness. Although AI improves work efficiency, many workplaces still use a human-in-the-loop system, where people make the final decisions. Therefore, it is important to understand both what AI can and cannot do. While AI can automate certain tasks, it cannot fully replace human workers. This is because AI lacks emotional intelligence, creativity, and ethical judgment; therefore, the involvement of humans remains essential in many professions.

AI lacks emotional understanding and empathy

Humans can empathize with others and respond appropriately and sensitively to emotional situations. Jobs such as counselor, teacher, nurse, and social worker rely heavily on emotional communication and understanding. Although AI can simulate empathy through programmed responses, it does not genuinely feel or comprehend emotions, which fundamentally limits its effectiveness in emotionally demanding roles. According to a 2023 report by McKinsey, over 70% of employees in healthcare and education said that emotional connection was the most important part of their work. AI can process data and language, but it cannot interpret subtle human emotions such as fear, compassion, or moral concern. This emotional gap is what makes human presence essential in professions that depend on empathy and trust.

AI cannot replicate human creativity and intuition

Creative fields like art, design, scientific research, and technological innovation depend on original and imaginative thinking. While AI generates results based on existing data, humans can create entirely new ideas that have never existed before. Intuition, imagination, and abstract thinking are uniquely human abilities that machines cannot truly reproduce. Experts such as Harvard cognitive scientist Steven Pinker argue that creativity arises from consciousness and personal experience—qualities that AI does not possess. AI can recombine existing ideas, but it cannot experience emotion, failure, or curiosity, which often inspire human innovation. True creativity requires not only data but also the ability to feel meaning and purpose—something inherently human.

AI is a tool that supports, not replaces, humans

In most industries, AI functions as an assistant rather than a substitute for human labor. For example, in medicine, AI helps analyze large sets of data, but doctors make the final diagnosis and treatment decisions. Furthermore, AI systems can still make mistakes, which means human oversight is crucial to ensure accuracy, safety, and ethical decision-making. A clear example is the use of AI in medical imaging. While algorithms can detect tumors with high accuracy, doctors must interpret these results in the context of a patient’s history, symptoms, and values before making a treatment decision. This human judgment ensures that technology serves people rather than replaces them.

Conclusion

Although AI has advanced rapidly and can perform specific tasks with remarkable efficiency, it still cannot take over human jobs entirely. Emotional understanding, creativity, and ethical judgment remain qualities that only humans possess. Instead of seeing AI as a threat, we should recognize it as a tool that enhances human abilities and makes work more effective. The future of work will depend not on replacing people with machines, but on fostering strong collaboration between them.

The Role of Social Media in Criminal Apprehension: An Effective Tool for Public Safety
by Lim Ji-hyun

In the digital age, social media has evolved from a simple communication platform into a powerful instrument for public engagement and information sharing. Among its many applications, one of the most impactful is the use of social media for public wanted notices—posts that disclose information about criminals or missing persons to seek assistance from the general public. This practice, often referred to as social media public alerts, has proven to be a valuable addition to modern law enforcement. By facilitating rapid information sharing, promoting civic participation, and reducing investigative costs, social media can significantly enhance the efficiency and reach of criminal apprehension.

One of the major advantages of social media public alerts lies in their ability to disseminate information quickly and widely. Traditional methods such as newspapers, television, or printed posters have limited coverage and are time-consuming to distribute. In contrast, a single post on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, or X (formerly Twitter) can reach millions of users within minutes. For instance, in one well-documented case, the police successfully arrested a suspect who had evaded capture for fifteen years within just one month of posting his photo online. The speed and reach of social media thus play a critical role in mobilizing the public and generating timely leads that can help authorities locate and apprehend suspects more efficiently.

Beyond rapid information dissemination, social media also fosters civic engagement and strengthens community awareness. Public alerts enable ordinary citizens to participate actively in crime prevention and investigation. When law enforcement agencies release CCTV footage or suspect profiles, citizens can provide valuable information through comments, direct messages, or anonymous tips. A notable example occurred when police shared surveillance images of a theft incident, and vigilant users quickly reported the suspects’ whereabouts, leading to an arrest within a day. Such participation not only empowers citizens but also cultivates a collective sense of responsibility and solidarity within communities, which contributes to long-term crime deterrence.

Moreover, the use of social media for public alerts offers a highly cost-effective alternative to conventional investigative methods. Traditional approaches such as television advertisements, physical search operations, and printed materials often require substantial financial resources and manpower. In contrast, creating and sharing a digital post is almost free and can reach exponentially larger audiences. Additionally, voluntary participation from the public further reduces operational costs while maintaining or even improving the success rate of criminal apprehension. In this sense, social media provides law enforcement agencies with a sustainable and efficient mechanism to maximize their limited resources.

In conclusion, the integration of social media into public safety efforts represents a significant advancement in modern policing. Its capacity to spread information rapidly, encourage civic participation, and minimize costs demonstrates that social media is not merely a communication tool but a vital instrument for social cooperation. When used responsibly and ethically, social media public alerts can enhance the speed and effectiveness of criminal investigations while fostering stronger, safer, and more connected communities.

When Truth Hurts: The Ethical Dilemma of Sharing Crime Stories
by Lee Dae-jeong

In the digital age, crime-related stories and videos have become increasingly common on social media and online platforms. These productions are often justified as efforts to inform the public or promote justice. However, the uncontrolled spread of such content raises serious ethical concerns. While transparency is important, the repeated exposure of crime narratives can inflict secondary harm on victims and their families. Therefore, the creation and distribution of crime-related media must be carefully regulated to prevent violations of privacy, emotional retraumatization, and the sensationalization of suffering.

First, crime videos frequently invade the privacy of victims and the accused, exposing personal information without consent. The media’s coverage of the Amanda Knox case exemplifies this issue. During the investigation, numerous outlets published not only details of Knox’s alleged involvement but also personal information about her family, including their home address. This invasion of privacy led to harassment and threats against both Knox and her relatives. Such incidents demonstrate how unregulated crime coverage can blur the line between informing the public and violating individual rights, turning private lives into public spectacles.

Second, repeated exposure to crime footage can retraumatize victims and their communities. Following the death of George Floyd in 2020, videos of his fatal encounter with police officers circulated widely across social media and news platforms. Although these videos played an important role in raising awareness of police brutality, their constant replay caused ongoing emotional pain for Floyd’s family and community. The psychological impact of seeing a loved one’s final moments shared repeatedly for public consumption underscores the need to balance social awareness with compassion for those directly affected.

Third, sensationalizing crime for entertainment purposes often prioritizes viewer engagement over ethical responsibility. Many online creators and video platforms use shocking titles, dramatic music, and graphic imagery to attract audiences, particularly in cases involving violent crimes or child exploitation. This approach transforms serious criminal issues into sources of entertainment, diminishing the dignity of victims and desensitizing viewers to real suffering. Ethical journalism requires restraint and respect for human dignity, values that are too often ignored in the pursuit of digital popularity.

In conclusion, while crime-related videos and stories can play a role in public education and justice, their production and distribution must adhere to strict ethical standards. Unchecked exposure risks violating privacy, intensifying trauma, and reducing human suffering to mere spectacle. To ensure that truth-telling does not become exploitation, media creators, journalists, and audiences must prioritize empathy, responsibility, and respect for those whose lives are affected by crime. Only then can the pursuit of truth coexist with the preservation of human dignity.

Should Human Gene Editing Be Allowed? (Pro)
by Lee Sung-eun

In a recent technology class, a presentation on stem cell research sparked an important discussion about the ethical boundaries of scientific progress. Similar to stem cell research, human gene editing raises profound questions about life, morality, and responsibility. Despite these concerns, the implementation of human gene editing should be allowed under strict ethical regulation, as it holds the potential to eradicate genetic disorders, promote scientific advancement, and enhance the overall quality of human life.

To begin with, human gene editing offers the possibility of eliminating serious genetic disorders that have afflicted families for generations. By correcting defective DNA sequences before birth, diseases such as cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, and sickle cell anemia could be prevented altogether. This would spare countless families from emotional suffering and the heavy financial costs associated with lifelong treatment. Moreover, the ability to remove inherited conditions could drastically reduce global healthcare burdens, offering relief to both individuals and society. Thus, gene editing represents a transformative opportunity to end the cycle of genetic suffering.

Furthermore, gene editing serves as a powerful driver of scientific and medical innovation. Through technologies such as CRISPR-Cas9, researchers can explore new methods of treating previously incurable diseases, including cancer, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s disease. The study of edited genes also deepens our understanding of human biology, opening doors to personalized medicine and advanced genetic therapies. These scientific breakthroughs not only improve medical outcomes but also expand the frontiers of human knowledge, encouraging responsible innovation across disciplines.

Lastly, human gene editing has the potential to improve the overall quality and longevity of human life. By preventing future generations from inheriting debilitating conditions, societies can reduce the economic and emotional strain of chronic illness. Healthier populations are likely to be more productive, creative, and stable, contributing positively to social and economic development. In this way, gene editing can serve as a foundation for a more equitable and prosperous future.

In conclusion, the authorization of human gene editing should be supported because its potential benefits in healthcare, science, and society outweigh the possible risks. When implemented responsibly, this technology could eradicate genetic diseases, advance scientific discovery, and improve human well-being on a global scale. Nevertheless, it is essential to establish rigorous ethical guidelines to prevent misuse and ensure equitable access. If humanity approaches gene editing with both caution and compassion, it can become a key instrument for building a healthier and more hopeful future.

The Limits of AI in Literature
by Choi Subin

What if your favorite novel were not written by a human, but generated by artificial intelligence (AI)? Recent advances in AI have enabled machines to produce poems, novels, and screenplays that resemble human writing. This development has sparked debate over whether AI-generated works should be recognized as authentic literature. Despite their technical sophistication, AI-written novels should not be equated with human literary creations because they lack genuine emotion, undermine human creativity, and risk spreading misinformation.

First, AI-generated literature lacks the authentic emotional depth that characterizes human writing. While AI systems can simulate emotions such as love, grief, and joy through patterns learned from data, they do not truly feel or understand these emotions. As a result, their writing often fails to convey the nuanced empathy and introspection found in human works. For instance, when AI models attempt to imitate tragic or romantic scenes, the outcomes tend to rely on clichés rather than lived experience. Literature is not merely a combination of words but an expression of consciousness shaped by personal memory and feeling—something machines cannot possess.

Second, excessive reliance on AI-generated writing could weaken human creativity and cultural expression. If AI becomes a dominant producer of literary content, aspiring writers may lose motivation to create, fearing that machines can do it faster or better. Furthermore, literature has long served as a mirror of human imagination and cultural diversity; outsourcing storytelling to algorithms risks homogenizing artistic voices. As linguist Noam Chomsky has argued, creativity is not the recombination of data but the capacity to generate meaning beyond existing rules—a capacity unique to human cognition. Therefore, supporting AI literature would undermine the very essence of creative culture.

Third, AI-written novels carry the danger of perpetuating bias and misinformation. Since AI systems learn from existing data, they may unconsciously reproduce stereotypes or factual inaccuracies embedded in that data. For example, an AI trained on biased sources could unintentionally reinforce gender or racial prejudices in its stories. Moreover, unlike human authors, AI lacks ethical awareness and accountability, meaning it cannot take responsibility for harmful content it generates. This absence of moral judgment poses a serious risk if AI-generated texts are published and widely consumed without proper oversight.

In conclusion, while AI technology has undeniably advanced the field of writing, it cannot replace the human essence that defines literature. AI-generated novels lack genuine emotion, threaten the creative spirit that sustains culture, and may spread misinformation without ethical awareness. Literature should remain a human-centered art form—one that captures the depth of emotion, imagination, and moral reflection unique to human experience. Rather than allowing machines to take over storytelling, society should use AI only as a supportive tool to inspire, not substitute, the human voice.

Euthanasia means helping a person end their life when they are in great pain.

Some people see it as an act of kindness, while others argue that it is morally wrong to end a life intentionally. Allowing euthanasia can respect each person's right to make decisions about their own life, help those who suffer from unbearable pain find peace, and let society use medical resources in a more meaningful way.

First, euthanasia respects patient autonomy by allowing individuals to make decisions about their own body and life.

This means that people should have the right to choose what happens to them, even in their final moments.

It is inhumane to compel a person to continue suffering when they no longer wish to endure pain.

For patients with terminal illnesses, the choice of euthanasia can give them comfort and a sense of dignity.

Respecting this choice shows true understanding of a person’s freedom and humanity.

Second, euthanasia provides a compassionate way to relieve unbearable suffering that medicine cannot fully address.

Despite medical advancements, some patients still face endless pain and hopelessness.

Beyond Public Education: The advantage of Private Tutoring

By. Seo Yoona

As Nelson Mandela once said, ‘Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.’ In Korea, both public and private education systems play important roles in shaping students’ futures.

While public education has long been the foundation of learning in Korea, private education has also become a significant part of students’ academic growth. Students have been receiving public education from an early age.

Public education is an indispensable system that provides equal learning opportunities for all students.

However, it is difficult to reflect both an individual's learning speed and level, and there are some limitations when preparing for entrance exams or when self-directed learning is required.

Private education provides customized education tailored to each student's learning ability and level. Private education focuses on individual students' abilities and provides in-depth learning to underachieving students narrowing the learning gap with students with excellent learning abilities. According to Jang Hee-won, participation in private education, time, and cost were all reported to have a significant relationship with joint venture performance. The relationship between private education and academic achievement in Korea was also found to be high, unlike most OECD countries.

Private education also enhances students’ self-directed learning by encouraging consistent study habits and independent problem-solving. It allows students to develop the habit of studying on their own as a tool for improving their learning, not directly improving their grades. For example, if private education sets up a study plan with homework tests, students develop a habit of studying on their own and improve their self-directed learning skills. Based on this, private education helps students improve their self-directed learning skills.

Private education is practically helpful in preparing for college entrance exams. It provides entrance examination information and strategies so that students and parents can make rational choices. In addition to the information related to entrance exams provided by schools, a wider variety of information can be found. In Korea, universities are an important factor and are the ultimate goal of most students. Therefore, the information given can be important to students.

Although public education remains the foundation of the learning system, it cannot fully address every student’s individual needs.

Nevertheless, it is not easy to solve all the differences in students' learning speed and proficiency, and it shows some disadvantages in situations where preparation for exams or self-directed learning is required. Therefore, private education is necessary to overcome these limitations and support students' academic growth. Despite its disadvantages, private education can positively complement public education by addressing its limitations and supporting students’ academic development.

Antidepressants do not necessarily worsen dementia

by LeeJiYul

With the aging of the global population, the number of people currently living with dementia has more than tripled since 1990, making a closer examination of commonly prescribed medications in elderly care formal tone. Depression is often associated with cognitive impairment and is among the most prevalent mental health disorders in older adults. Consequently, the massive increase in antidepressant use has prompted a key question: do these drugs affect or even worsen the course of dementia?

While this issue warrants careful study, an increasing body of scientific evidence indicates that antidepressants are not a cause of cognitive decline. On the contrary, appropriate antidepressant therapy is essential for maintaining mental stability and may even contribute to preserving brain health.

This misunderstanding has led to widespread fear among both patients and clinicians, but evidence shows that the reality is far more nuanced. Although certain observational studies have reported an association between antidepressant use and dementia, this does not establish a direct causal link. In fact, many well-designed clinical studies identify depression itself as a significant risk factor and in some cases an early indicator of dementia. Chronic, untreated depression elevates cortisol levels, damages the hippocampus, and accelerates neuronal loss, all of which impair cognitive function. Therefore, the observed connection is likely due to the underlying vulnerability of patients with depression rather than the pharmacological effects of the medication. From this perspective, effective treatment of depression is protective not harmful to cognitive health.

Furthermore, research suggests that some antidepressant classes mav have neuroprotective effects. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), the most commonly prescribed antidepressants, regulate serotonin activity in the central nervous system. Serotonin plays a vital role not only in mood regulation but also in memory formation, learning processes, and neurogenesis the formation of new neurons.

Experimental studies—including animal models—show that SSRIs may reduce neuroinflammation and limit the buildup of amyloid-beta plaques, both key features of Alzheimer’s disease. Thus, when administered appropriately, antidepressants can simultaneously alleviate depressive symptoms and enhance neural resilience.

Large-scale longitudinal studies further support this conclusion. Analyses of patient data across multiple countries have consistently found no increased risk of dementia among long-term antidepressant users compared to non-users. A 2021 meta analysis published in Frontiers in Pharmacology synthesized data from numerous studies and reported no statistically significant relationship between antidepressant use and dementia onset. Notably, the same study found that patients who achieved remission from depression performed better on cognitive assessments over time.

This finding preserving cognition is more closely linked to the successful treatment of depression than to the avoidance of antidepressant use.

In conclusion, concerns that antidepressants exacerbate dementia are not supported by the current weight of scientific evidence. Instead, research reveals a more complex and hopeful picture: the untreated depressive disorder, rather than the medication itself, poses the greater threat to cognitive health. Antidepressants, when carefully prescribed and monitored, remain a vital tool in protecting both emotional and cognitive well-being in older adults. Rather than discouraging their use, clinicians and caregivers should prioritize accurate diagnosis, appropriate dosage, and continuous monitoring key strategies for preserving brain health and improving quality of life in an aging world.
