A number of our Civics Fellows will host and facilitate the webinars, and will use the final 10-15 minutes to talk about how the presented resources align to the recommended civics & social studies scope & sequence released in October 2023. Each of the social studies teacher field trips is capped at 25-35 teachers and is $25.  The focus is on place-based learning and using sites/student field trips as ways to meet social studies standards.  Because these are extremely limited in space/seats, I ask that you please respect teacher space by only registering if you are a K-12 classroom teacher.  No humans under the age of 18 should be on these teacher-focused field trips.  Registration closes when we reach capacity or one week before the event.

The Great Depression: voices from the Chippewa Valley

Summary:This resource kit contains primary and secondary source materials intended for hands-on use to support a study of the Great Depression and the New Deal during the 1930's. The materials represent the depression-related experiences of people living in Wisconsin and the Chippewa Valley. The curriculum-based kit is designed for middle and high school student use, but it is adaptable for educators to use with varying age levels.

History detectives: discovering history through objects and photographs

Summary: Third grade teacher Tom Ropella developed a three-part curriculum unit to help his students understand this basic concept. Instead of answering his student's question, "Who made Menomonie?" he taught all of his students to be history detectives so they could answer the question themselves. He wanted them "to see that there are individuals, groups, and institutions who have affected, and are affected by, the history of the community they are from." The History Detectives kit provides lessons and activities to help students and teachers discover history.

Title: What Research Tells Us about Indigenous Children’s Development

Description: Research on Indigenous children’s development has grown over the years, adding to our understanding of both the challenges they face, as well as their resilience and thriving. Join Dr. Michelle Sarche to learn more about how the field has evolved and grown, how Indigenous scholars are increasingly leading the way in child development research, and most importantly, what the research literature tells us about Indigenous children’s development, and the factors within their families, communities, and peer networks that influence their development. Dr. Sarche will discuss the importance of authentic research-community partnership for ensuring that research addresses the priorities of Indigenous communities, highlighting examples of such partnerships within the field of early childhood and the central role that Indigenous research methodologies play for guiding those partnerships and the research they pursue.
