Mary Mackillop was born in Melbourne on the 15th of January 1842. She grew up win the suburb of Fitzroy in Melbourne. Mary was the eldest daughter to Scottish immigrant Alexander and Flora Mackillop. McKillop was raised in a Catholic family of eight children including herself. She was educated in private schools and sometimes by her father who studied to become a priest but was later employed by an importing and exporting company. Because Mary's family was so big her parents had trouble supporting it so she began working at the age of 14 as a Clerk. She later took on a job at Portland in Melbourne as a teacher on her Aunt and Uncle's property. At that job she would teach and take care of the children. At this time in her life she was already tending to the poor as she included the farm children in her lessons. During this point in her life Mary first made contact with Father Woods. After two years at the property she accepted a job teach the Cameron children at Penola. After a short time she moved on to accept a job teaching at the Portland School. Finally McKillop opened a school with her sisters called Bay View House Seminary for Young Ladies (now called The Bay View College). Mary MacKillop suffered a stroke in 1902 and was disabled for seven years until her death on the 8th August 1909.

Mary Mackillop dedicated her life to showing compassion to those who didn't receive it from society. She spent a fraction of her life teaching the less fortunate and giving them a quality education. Her legacy lives on today with schools opened in her honour and and her own school which she opened that continues to live out her legacy. Another party of her legacy was the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart. The sisters have continued Mary's life legacy by giving children in third world countries a quality education.

The parable of The Sheep and The Goats. This story may have inspired Mary Mackillop because of the sheep in the story. The Sheep were in heaven being faced by the son of God. They were told that because of the actions they showed whilst they lived that they could take their share of inheritance and would live in heaven. Whether the Goats who didn't show good actions were banished and cursed. Throughout her life Mary Mackillop showed compassion and good actions to those in need and to those who simply needed help. No matter who was in need Mary was their to help them.

When Mary and her fellow sisters weren't helping those in need they spent their time in prayer. Although Mary didn't ever write about the prayers that she prayed she carried Rosary Beads around wherever she went so its safe to assume she and her sisters often prayed: The Hail Mary, The our Father, The Glory Be and The Hail Holy Queen.

The church’s response was slow. They at first were against the idea because they were used to forming their actions following the gospel and industrialisation wasn’t a part of the gospel. But eventually they began speaking out about the affects the working conditions were having on people starting with Pope Leo XIII. The message of this letter is to reach out to the public and speak “of the new things’. Mary Mckillop lived through this time and would have had to adjust along with society to these changes. She would have likely had to reach out to those having trouble adjusting or loosing their jobs to this cause and offer help to them.

Mary Mckillop demonstrated the priestly work of Jesus through her actions. She dedicated her life to God and spreading the word whilst also doing what she could for not only her community but the wider community as well. She opened schools, care for the less fortunate and also led her sisters. Mary demonstrated the prophetic work of Jesus through her words. She taught children from all backgrounds and any kind wealth the good word of God and made sure they were all well-educated. Mary demonstrated the Kingly work of Jesus through her actions and words. Not only did Mary lead her fellow sisters to the path of God, she lead the community by showing them compassions and teaching them Jesus’ ways through her actions.
