(Harbir Mahal)

There are many examples of other health impairments, one of which is diabetes. CDN (College Diabetes Network) was founded by a college student with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). She felt that it was difficult to manage and felt extremely isolated. She started off by forming a group on campus so that other students and herself could support one another, exchange strategies, and discuss/exchange supplies. From there her vision for CDN grew.

CDN provides resources on how to prepare for students with T1D going off to college for the first time. Its REACH initiative works directly with campus leaders to inform them about T1D and how-to better support students. The initiative also works with other organizations to: “build consensus to better support student health and well-being, develop resources specifically designed for campus professionals, communicate best-practice guidelines and standard protocols, collaborate on university-specific initiatives and programs.”

CDN has campus chapters so that students are receiving direct support while in college. Chapters hold consistent meetings where they share ideas, plan awareness events, and support one another around living with T1D.

(Harbir Mahal)

Chapter 13 focuses on Students with Orthopedic Impairments, Traumatic Brain Injury, and other health impairments. The Brain Injury Association of America has a website (biausa.org) with a multitude of resources. Regardless of one’s connection to TBI (whether having experienced it, being a caregiver, a professional in the field, or an ally), the website has information for everyone. Not only is the site built to support those with TBI and their families, but also to help build understanding and awareness for the general public.

It features upcoming special events and conferences, as well as information on current public policy and research in relation to TBI. Additionally, it has a hotline to connect to a brain injury expert that will also point you to local resources, a marketplace (books, webinars, educational resources, etc), legal support, and opportunities to take part in current studies. The website provides basic information on TBI, diagnosis, treatment, and what to expect in children/adults. As mentioned earlier, the website provides an opportunity to connect with others with TBI. Directly on their site, there is a place to read others’ stories and to share your own.

(Harbir Mahal)

The needs of scholars with orthopedic impairments vastly differ in relation to their academic and physical needs. This is because there are not only different levels of severity, but also many different impairments that fall under this category. Looking specifically at scholars who are impacted in fine-motor skills, an instructional technique that teachers can use is providing scholars with assistive technology. There are three categories for assistive technology devices: for accessing information, for positioning, and for mobility.

Devices designed to help access information help scholars access the content/material and help them participate in activities/assignments/in class. These devices include, but are not limited to speech recognition software, screen reading software, and communication boards. This technology allows scholars who may not otherwise be able to produce homework assignments, notes, essays, use a calculator, etc., complete their tasks with speech-to-text technology. Communication boards can assist those scholars whose disability affects oral-motor skills.
