Hi, reader! I am Katherine Q. Canama, I'd much rather be preferred as "Arin". I am 20 years old and I am a BS Entertainment and Multimedia Computing student! BSEMC is a game development centered program, allowing its students to be able to express their creative freedom through gaming and arts.

First: Game On!

As a man of many talents, I have plenty to offer. Especially in terms of the Philippine Pop Culture present today. It's quite hard to narrow down the variety of pop culture genres today but I will do my best to narrow everything down.

In foresight, I love Esports. In the rising esports scene in the Philippines, I am definitely interested in esports league and such that. Much to it that I even established an Esports Club in MMCM! I founded MMCM Azure Pantheons in hopes to collaborate with other Collegiate schools in Davao and slowly climbing up to the Region!

Second: Pop, Pop! K-Pop!

With the progression of music and international artists, I found myself in the rabbit hole of K-Pop. I don't only enjoy this movement but I also lean towards Western artists such as Taylor Swift, and even to local OPM! Personally, K-Pop had the biggest impact in terms of my creative personality and even fed me ideas that I did not have before. I specifically enjoy the different concepts of girl and boy groups that Western artists does not have.

Third: Filipino humor and its sub-categories.

Filipino's "kanal" humor got me by the neck. With the rise of internet and as its users became more enticed by entertaining such audiences, people really show their humor by creating memes out of context to lighten up a mood or situation of an event. The audience enjoys anything that cracks them up after a long day of work or school. However, those people who does not seem to understand the humor are ticked off about it. Which is completely understandable for this humor is definitely not everyone's cup of tea.

Fourth: Misadventures of the internet

As a former journalist, it pains me to see that people still don't know the clear line between sarcasm, trolling, and facts. Especially during elections, trolls were everywhere. Though I don't necessarily enjoy people's deminse, it's disheartening seeing people defend the opposition instead of fighting with the minorities. I would like to shine light upon this predicament that our nation is facing which is concerning considering the rise of technology and advancements.

Fifth: Go sip, girl!

Cafes. Nobody really talks about the numerous cafes popping out from every corner. As a student, I've done a murderous amount of work confined in the four corners of a caffeine-run space. Something about these places just make me feel like an unstoppable work-machine. Burnouts don't exist when you paid for a 200 peso cup of coffee with a 3-hour Wi-Fi limit. If you'd ask "Why won't you work at home?" Well, home is almost 150 kilometer away. I live alone since I chose to study here in Davao and overhearing gossips from another table while you are rushing a deadline at the same day just feels nice! It makes me feel rooted and curious about their gossip...

Ah, Esports. I would need more than 1 paragraph to discuss the passion that I have for this field. Watching Valorant's first ever Champions Tour lit the flame in me. The passion I did not expect to have. Knowing how these players fought against the community and standards of what a real sport is,--is just beyond fascinating. Gaming has been considered a problem in our community, it's always seen as a distraction (which for most it is their escape from reality). We often see young adults indulge themselves in their computers rather than hanging out with their families, but the problem does not really root from the video games themselves. It is a much deeper concern that their families should be worried about. Esports teach their players to be disciplined on and off the court. Similar to traditional sports, esports is also considered as an extremely competitive scene. And personally, it is much much harder than the traditional sports. It is my main goal as the Founder of AzP to create a safe community within my school where players are able to show their interests and their passion with others--with 0 judgment.

GAME, ON!

Changing the narrative that has been instilled in many's minds is challenging. Of course, I would not be in the game without a gameplan. This is where the Agenda Theory comes in handy!

Paint them a Picture.
By allowing the public to imagine a picture wherein they can consider esports as a real sport, this will definitely help them clear their minds and even support the movement.
Community Engagement.
Community engagements are plausible through charities and fundraising activities. For example in my club, I am planning to conduct a tournament wherein the cash prize will be donated to a local animal shelter. By doing so, this allows the community to see the light and how big the esports community really is.
Uplifting Player Morale.
Of course they are the actors and I am a mere director. Creating a prolific profiles of the players will be an easy way to battle the stigma. By showing that despite them being one of the best players, they also excel in academics and have great social skills.

These are only a few keypoints of what we can do as a community to aid the roaring flames painted by the media and change the narrative. There are more yet to come and I will create my own way to pave through these disparities.
