Flipped Maths Classroom by Teacher Academy

In the video, the teacher refers to Khan Academy and uses the Explain Everything tool. What other resources, apps and tools do you know that could be useful when trying to implement a flipped classroom model? What challenges do you see in implementing the model? Share your views here in the Padlet.

In my experience implementing flipped classrooms, I have noticed that all the tasks are carried out with better results whenever the following two elements are foreseen:
1) cooperation;
2) concrete commitment.
That is why I prefer letting students work in groups and make them compare each group's achievements at the end in a round up discussion. Sometimes I suggest where to find references beforehand, sometimes I let students freely choose their sources. At any rate, I establish some precise requirements in relation to the exposition of students' learning, so that the output of different groups can be easily compared. In this way, students learn how to improve they flipped learning style.

I started using Flipped classroom in 2013. At that time I used a software called Camtasia, I did't have IPad, and I produced my video lessons on the computer and than I put them on my YouTube channel and shared with the students by sending the link by email. It was a very complicated and unefficent. Now I use regularly this strategy since technology has advanced a lot. , I record my lesson with Explain everything on the IPad, I can insert photo and picture, wrote by hand formulas, ,insert graphs made while recording by opening a browser page of desmos graphic calculator, etc. Then I upload the video on my you tube channel and share with my students in Tes, Blendapce, a virtual environment tool that allows you to insert quizzes and a lot of other resources. In this way I can check if students listen the video and if they understand it and act consequently! In class of course you can dedicate more time to practice and follow students' progress and give them immediate feedback.
The main difficulty for me is the possibility for the students to have access to technology. They have smartphone but often they don't have computers or they don't have fast web connections. A class with each student having its tablet is something that we can only immagine..

Flipped MAths classroom ? Never heard of it before and I am kind of enthusiastic about this innovative method. I would like to try it after being more informed about it myself and see how it works in practice with my own students. When I apply myself this model, only then I will be able to see its benefits for the students and the limits it poses to both teaching and learning. Yet, I can't be but sceptical since in our educational system teaching most of the times is implemented in realistic time and very little homework can be assigned to the students according to the instructions we get from our national ministry of education. I have to admit that it sounds very promising but my question to those who have implemented this model of blended learning is: does it work with students who have difficulties?
As for alternative tools that can be used in the math class I could suggest edmodo (a virtual class) or wikis, the latter for solving a math problem in cooperation.

Another important challenge is that it also requieres that students really focus on the material, they need to be really responsible to avoid distractions.

I think it would be wise to use a Learning Management System (LMS) in a flipped class like Moodle, Canva, Edmodo or Google Classroom, a video authoring tool like Windows movie maker, Edpuzzle, Youtube or Animoto, a video screening tool like Camtasia, CamStudio or Screencast-o-matic, a voice editor-recorder like Audacity , a Google or Microsoft account to use the cloud services Drive and One Drive in order to share files and collaborate on-line, a file-hosting service like Dropbox, a teleconference tool like the Big Blue Button and of course a selection of videos and podcasts from TedEd, NASA Kid, ESA Kid, PBS, National Geographic, Soundcloud.

The implementation of the flipped class model is not an easy task due to a variety of technical and pedagogical reasons. Let’s say we have a tech-savvy teacher who has the time and the expertise to prepare loads of digital content and all our students have access to a computer with internet connection at their homes. Thus, have we overcome the technical issues? Absolutely not, cyber security, intellectual property, plagiarism, cyberbullying, racist and gender biases and fake news are serious issues which we must take into account when we go digital. Most important, students are easily distracted when they work at home and even more when they work in a fully digitized environment. Multitasking (like checking the Messenger, the Facebook, the Instagram, the emails inbox) is consuming the time and the minds of those who are less motivated. Therefore, the teachers need to monitor constantly (like the Big Brother?) what their students do when they are in front of their monitors and to analyze megabytes of data to provide timely, accurate and qualitative feedback. In any case, the flipped class model cannot flip the socioeconomic status or the cultural capital of our students and therefore further educational research is need it before we fully adopt it.

I think it´s a good tool because you can use the class time to practise and give feedback for students instead of explaining in the blackboard. You can also show in the videos things in 3D. One challenge is students get used to come to class with the video seen because if not, the project falls.

"Inverted Learning" is a form of active learning that allows you to "turn around" the usual learning process in this way: homework for students is to view relevant video footage with the training material of the next lesson, the students independently master the theoretical material, and in the classroom time is used to perform practical tasks , creation of projects, discussion of problematic issues, discussions. This is a pedagogical model in which the typical presentation of lectures and the organization of homework are changing places. Video lectures are viewed as a key component in the "inverted" approach, they are trained by the teacher and posted on the Internet.
The advantages of "inverted" learning are: increased activity, development of cooperation, personalization of training, access to information and communication technologies. An overturned model places greater responsibility for teaching students, gives them an incentive to study, experiment.
Web quest. This is an Internet search that aims at learning, that is, gaining new knowledge, consolidating existing knowledge, strengthening the skills of using the Internet and other educational skills. The result of working with a web-based quest is the publication of students' work results in the form of web pages, websites, or presentations that run in Microsoft Office PowerPoint.

Flipped classroom model is lately gaining more supporters in education because it offers students the chance to take the initiative during the learning process. On the other hand, there are challenges such as the transition from traditional to modern teaching itself. For sure, it won't be easy for the teacher at first to give up the role which he represented until now.

What challenges do you see in implementing the model?
I use Edmodo: I created "virtual classes" for each grade and subject and I had all my students register on the platform.
On Edmodo I upload a PDF document I generate at the end of each lesson from the Interactive Whiteboard software, I upload also other materials I produce or links to apps or videos.
My students can use Edmodo to call on me and ask questions about exercises they cannot solve and I try to answer them as soon as possible, they use it also sometimes to communicate with me about personal issues they don't want to explain at school.
I recorded some lessons last year using Screencast-O-Matic and a presentation software (Libre Office Impress).
The problem with flipped classroom in my experience is that some students don't get the importance of watching the videos at home, so they skip that part (and avoid doing Math homework, Yippee!!) and come to class not prepared to work on exercises.

The videos I make have always been after an in class teaching of the material and are great for students who are absent or don’t fully understand a topic yet. The way in which our school is set up it is hard to do too much of a flipped classroom as we can only give 30 min of homework for the week and you never know when they are going to do their homework to know if it will be before or after you have taught a lesson. My year 7’s who use Khan academy for homework though do occasionally get homework that is meant to be done before a lesson is taught by watching a video and it has been both good and bad. I think it is a great way to also promote perseverance in students as many of our students give up when they don’t understand right or way or something is too hard.

On October 4, the project "Making Learning and Thinking Visible in Italian Secondary Schools (MLTV)" was launched, which was signed by Harvard Graduate School for Education and Indire, which involved our institute. Harvard School for Education in Boston has decided to experiment with its "Project Zero" with which to start the research and development of new teaching practices. So, Sabrina and I are participating in our first classes in this experiment.
The aim is to innovate the School, giving emphasis and visibility to thinking and learning, focusing on the sociality and creativity of each student and teacher, in order to develop a range of practices, facilities and teaching tools innovations that will eventually be disseminated within the Educational Induction Avanguard Network, formed by over 500 Schools across the country. For this purpose, a class 4.0 has been created where each pupil has its own tablet and a touch screen monitor. The apps we are experimenting with are Everything Tool and Team Viewer. TeamViewer connects people, machines, and devices around the world to the widest range of platforms and technologies. In this context, Flipped Classroom is the most used methodology

Flipped classroom model seems nice, because students learn by themselves. But I can't imagine that we use this model every day. We don't have tablets in our classrooms and videos available online are usually in English, so they are not very useful for our students. Sometimes we go to the ICT classroom and students use online material to learn alone, but they don't prepare in advance. Maybe I will change this next time.

I like the flipped classroom concept, especially for students who are not well supported at home. It gives me the time to work individually with those students who are struggling, while faster learners can move on to more challenging ideas. Doing practice at home does not provide immediate feedback or opportunities for clarification and consequently many students do not complete set tasks. However, setting research, introductory ideas and note-taking is much more useful as a homework task and generally gets a better response.
