In the book, “Lord of the Flies”, Golding uses fire to symbolizes hope for rescue but chaos if something happens to the fire such as it going out or out of control. When they initially build the fire, they built it so that the smoke would be seen by passing planes and ships so they would be rescued, as the book goes on they have struggles involving the fire. In this reading section, the fire goes out of control and then completely goes out. This causes them to feel as though there is no hope for survival anymore because they can’t have a fire. “The flames were mastering the branches, the bark was curling and falling away, the wood exploding.” (Golding 98). This quote illustrates the fire getting out of control when Samneric are watching over which is also when they saw the beast and their "society" goes out of control. The fire could also be a symbol for a controlled, calm society because when the fire goes out or something happens with it, it always causes some form of chaos. "We want smoke. And you go wasting your time." (Golding 108). This shows drama happening between the boys because of a desire for survival from the island.

Golding puts Ralph in the book, Lord of the Flies, to illustrate someone in society who has to take charge and protect everyone who is living on the island. Ralph is chosen to be chief of all the boy who are stranded on the island. He has done good so far and he will do whatever it takes to dig deeper into the fear of the unknown which still lays ahead.

Ralph has been able to keep everyone in check so far. Although, the problems start to pile up right before his eyes, "Ralph spoke again, hoarsely. He had not moved. You let the fire go out," (Golding 70). The fire was there one hope to get off the island, but the hunters had left the fire unattended. Now Ralph doesn't know what the next step is and ome of these problems are just too much for him to handle.

The unknown can not be controlled, the only thing that can be controlled is how you tackle the future. Ralph needs to make his decisions very wisely so that all these boys can be rescued. In the book, Ralph really brings forth bravery so he can dig deeper into the unknown, “I’m chief. I’ll go. Don’t argue. You. Hide here. Wait for me.” (Golding 104). He wants to keep all the other boys safe so he is risking his own life.

Golding puts Jack in the book, The Lord of the Flies, to illustrate someone in society who can be helpful at times, but can also be a problem. Jack was not chosen as chief which probably made him jealous of Ralph. He causes a lot of problems, which leave all the boys with the fear of the unknown on their backs.

Jack was very embarrassed that he wasn't chosen as chief, so I don't think he is taking any of his responsibilities seriously. Which is going to affect him in the long run. He was very focused on killing the pig, "I cut the pigs throat," (Golding 69) Jack was excited that he was able to kill it and bring back food for the other boys. What he doesn't know is that he caused a big problem, which will probably lead him to need to go hunting a lot because he doesn't know what the future holds.

The hunters were in charge of the fire, but Jack took them hunting. Without anyone watching the fire it was bound to go out. That's just what it did, “We had to have them in the hunt or there wouldn't have been enough for a ring," (Golding 70). Jack wasn’t thinking about the future, he was only paying attention to what he wanted to do. They have food now, but because the fire went out, they lost their chance to be safe.

Theme Analysis

Theme: Golding uses the subject, fear of the unknown, to illustrate how the curiosity of the boys is slowly making them grow into a routine on the island because of their long period away from society, but some of the decisions that are made might tear them apart. They are starting to realize there is a big possibility they will not be saved. He uses the worldview of fear of the unknown to relate the boys to people scared of society. Golding is trying to describe that the world itself is an unknown place and people in society get scared of what they are not familiar with and the boys are lost from their usual environments so the possibilities of unknown events and creatures are endless.

Quote #1:”Ralph ran stumbling along the rocks saved himself on the edge of the pink cliff and screamed at the ship come back come back.” Ralph reached inside himself for the worst word he knew. They let the bloody fire go out.”( Golding 68) Golding shows the fear of the unknown because when the ship leaves the boys don't know what to do and are at loss for words and ideas. the ship going away and the fire letting out was a sign of hope and faith leaving the island.

Quote #2: “i suppose said ralph if we keep on by the sea this way well come out below the burnt bit and then we can climb the mountain” (golding 116) This quote illustrates the fear of the known because of ralphs lack of order and how he is just guessing that this is the best way to climb the mountain, he doesn't have any background knowledge to infer what could truly be up there and how they could get up there safely
