Autism spectrum disorder also know as ASD is a "developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges" (www.cdc.gov)
Upon diagnosis of ASD there are three levels, called levels of support. This refers to the level of support the individual would need to complete daily tasks.
Level one- May be referred to as "high functioning" individuals with symptoms that don't interfere greatly with social settings, or minor behavioral issues.
Level Two- People with ASD may require some outside support in day to day activity (speech therapy, or a behavioral therapist)
Level Three- People with ASD require substantial outside support on a daily basis (may include a full time aid)
(healthline.com)

Because ASD is a developmental disability, and not a physical disability, there are screenings done by pediatricians at well child appointments at
- 9 months
- 18 months
- 30 months
If parents suspect their child has ASD.
Adaptations for people with ASD

Adaptations can be very helpful for people with ASD. There are many adaptations that can vary from easy to difficult. Many times people with ASD find going in public hard because they can be over stimulated very easily by different things like noise, light, and crowds. One great tool for people with ASD is noise cancelling headphones.
Another can be diming sunglasses to help with sensitivity to light, like the ones made at this website Autistic Sensory Overload Glasses | Autistalline Glasses Hamilton.
One of the best things can also be a set day to day routine. (https://www.autismspeaks.org) There are many adaptations available, it does depend on the person and what they find helpful.

Accommodations for People with ASD

Educational accommodations for people with ASD (in North Carolina) are thanks to the 504 plans. A 504 plan is based on section 504 of the rehabilitation act. In North Carolina this means that children in school with ASD are evaluated for an IEP (individualized education plan) which allows for accommodations based on the child's needs after an IEP evaluation. Accommodations vary from student to student, some of them include, one on one teaching, being allowed breaks to avoid over stimulation, testing in an environment they feel comfortable in, reading tests allowed, multiple testing sessions and even being allowed to use their own keyboards or assistive tools in school.

For someone who has never experienced Autism Spectrum Disorder, it can be especially difficult to teach them. One resource I found to be helpful for teacher is Waterford.org.
Which gives teachers knowledge on what ASD is, how it can effect students learning, and tips on how to approach teaching students with ASD. It even has programs made specifically for students with ASD to help them achieve their goals for education.

Many parents with children who have Autism Spectrum Disorder, have little knowledge of what they can do for their children. One resource that I found was autismspeaks.org. In this website you can go into Help and Information, then go to resources, once there you can put in what state your in, your child's age, and their level of support. After that it gives you a list of resources in your state for your child.
