Thousands of years ago, Native Americans from Asia traveled to what is now Alaska. They traveled across the Bering Strait Land Bridge ( or Beringia ) which was made of glaciers. They traveled with mammoths, which was their main food source. Once the mammoths died out, the Native Americans had to adapt to their new environment.

Colombian Exchange

In the 1400s, Christopher Columbus sailed 3 ships to find the 'new world'. They eventually found land. Mistakenly thinking he was in the Indies, he called the numberless amount of people the Indians. That name has obviously stuck with us for centuries. The Colombian Exchange is just as it sounds exchanging goods around the world. There were pros and cons to this system of trade. Pros: the countries involved were introduced to new animals and products, such as horses, cows, chocolate, coffee, and corn which helped the countries' economy. New religion and ideas were spread as well. Cons: many deadly diseases were spread that killed both humans and animals. Rat and flea infestations caused disasters. Lastly, many Native Americans and Africans were forced into slavery.

there are many reasons why Europeans wanted to explore and conquer many lands. 3 main reasons or the 3 Gs: Gold, God and Glory. Gold: there were legends about there being gold in the New World, so they had to have it. God: missionaries. People who traveled to the New World to spread Christianity to the Natives. And finally, glory. The europeans wanted to be rich and famous for claiming land. Another reason was to spread trade. The Netherlands wanted to expand trade with animal fur.

Reasons for colonial settlement in English colonies

There were many reasons why people settled in the New World. A main one was to break away from the Church in England. Thats who the pilgrims were. They didn't agree with the religion/ church in England so they broke away completely and traveled on the Mayflower to avoid being killed, jailed or mistreated in the Old World. In the New World, they elected their own leaders, and created their own laws. Another reason for colonial settlement was to become rich. Eventually, in the Old World, they had many cash crops such as cotton, rice, indigo and the main one: tobacco. For this, they needed people to pick it, right? This is where slavery comes in. Before slavery, poor English people called indentured servants ( they worked for usually 5-7 years and were able to own their own land and had money. But slaves got on freedom, no land and had to pick cash crops for life! The last reason which goes along with slavery is resources for England. John Rolfe discovered tobacco and made a fortune! This was great for England because they got money. John Rolfe was also known for marrying the famous Pocahontas of the Powhatan tribe.

Mayflower Compact

In the year 1620, a group of people from England called the Pilgrims sailed off to the New World on a ship called the Mayflower. They have broken away from the church in England for religious reasons. They totally disagree with the Church. If they had stayed, they would've had to deal with religious persecution. The Church would either have jailed, tortured or killed them because of their religion. So, they decided to break away and start fresh. They landed in the Netherlands at first, but they decided this wasn't the right place for their kids to live. Then, they landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts. On their way to the New World, they wrote a pact called the Mayflower compact. This was written by the men on board, who called themselves Separatists, because they separated from the Church. The compact contained of how they would govern their new colony.

Self- Government in the colonies

In the New World, there were 13 colonies. Each colony was different. This topic as a lot to do with the Mayflower Compact. In the colonies, people selected their leaders, and created their own laws, from permission of the King. John Winthrop was the leader of the Puritans. These people were similar to the Pilgrims, but they didn't totally disagree with the Church. They just thought it needed some changes, they wanted to purify it. Thats where the name Puritans came from. John Winthrop followed any rules from the bible. If you sinned, or disobeyed the bible, you were killed.
