The teachers seem to discriminate against the Latino students by discouraging Spanish use, and as a result, the students feel their culture is discriminated against. The student, in turn, feel alienated from school and are less likely to achieve school expectations. "The authors found an indirect relationship between discrimination and academic outcomes. Greater levels of discrimination and sharper increases in discrimination were associated with poorer perceptions of school climate at the end of 10th grade; this perception of school climate was found to be a predictor of students’ grade point averages and total absences at the end of 10th grade."

The teacher refers her to counseling and allows her to miss class once per week to get guidance when she is upset. The teacher prejudges her with lower expectations of work performance due to social-emotional issues that are unresolved.
