The reason why Coates chose not comfort his son when the police officer who killed Eric Garne would not be indicted is because he wanted his son to learn about the injustices that he will have to face in his life, especially as a young African American. i personally don't remember my thoughts an/or options on the verdict when is was first announced. Most people resort to protesting as a way to stand against police brutality. Though some have resorted to rioting as a way to show their resistance against the police , as shown in New York City, Baltimore, and Charleston.

The reason he does not comfort his son is to allow him to see the reality of life. He wants his son to open his eyes the way he did during Jones death. That was the moment he knew that life was against him and his body. He didn't want to put a bubble between his son and the reality of the world. He wants his son to see how cruel and unforgiving it can truly be.

He chose not to comfort his son because he thought it was wrong"... because I thought it would be wrong to comfort you." I found this verdict unfair, that the claim that it was a misunderstanding would set a muderer free. That getting no justice for what happened to that man would please the family that just lost a loved one. I haven't seen any Black Lives Matter movements myself, but I agree completely with what they represent. Young people are resisting and organizing locally against police brutality by doing protests and making signs, posting on social media about it, and more.

Coates chose not to comfort his son from the news because he wants his son to understand that not everything in life is happiness and lively joy and rainbows -- there would be times in life where something bad could happen, accidentally or not, and would have to face it one way or another. The first part of dealing with something is if you are mature enough to handle it.

Coates chose not to comfort his son from the news because he thought it was "wrong" and he wanted his son to get used to the pain of being in a black body. At first, I was upset on the fact that Coates was seeing his son struggling in the pain of Eric Garner's death and that he can't comfort his son for his reasons. But then I realized that his son will benefit from this and will sooner get stronger. I've observed that the Black Lives Matter Movement doesn't only partially exist and I think that inequality between Black and White people on the streets still exists. Young people are organizing locally against police brutality by protesting on streets.

Ta-Nehisi did not choose to comfort his son because he wanted him to comprehend the reality of being black in America. Ta-Nehisi realizes that being a minority in America can be detrimental to their survival, and wanted to make him stronger. He says that "...[he] thought it would be wrong to comfort [him]." I was appalled at this verdict because the United States has a history of white police officers killing unarmed black citizens with no penalty whatsoever. I have observed the Black Lives Matter movement in Ferguson rioting over the death of Michael Brown, who was killed by Darren Wilson, a white police officer. Young people are resisting by marching, giving speeches, and even more radical methods such as destroying property.

Coates refused to comfort his son during the announcement because he wanted his son to feel the sadness he felt in order to realize the impact of the injustices conducted against the black population of America. He wants his son to feel sad now so that he can understand the truth about the country that calls itself great. He tells his son that he "wanted [him] to feel what [he] felt." My reaction to the verdict was one mainly of frustration. I was in 6th grade at the time, and I didn't pay attention to all the other details of the crime. All I knew was that a cop had killed an innocent man, and that it was wrong to do so. When I found out that the cop wasn't actually penalized for the crime, I was a little bit upset, but I thought of St. Louis as another world, and that it wouldn't impact me very much. Since then, I have noticed an increased level of activity in the black lives matter movement across the country. People are trying to fight the civil unrest peacefully, so as not to give anyone any real reason to go against the movement.
