The Portuguese royal family escaped Europe and set up court in Brazil. After the walls the King John did not return to Portugal right away. He believed his presence stopped independence movements. Brazil raised to an equal forming the United Kingdom of Portugal Brazil. Portugal was governed by the British who remained there after the Napoleonic Wars. People rebelled and the liberal revolution of 1820. They demanded John to return so he did in 1822. Left his son to take place. Civilians and police surrounded him and sent him to Portugal. They surrendered in Salvador in July, all their territory except Montevideo. Other son Miguel led a coup and made his father to abolish the Constitution. The brothers have to fight for the crown of Portugal during liberal wars.

Prince regent John of Braganza later named King John VI of Portugal united with its former metropolis. He named his eldest son as prince regent of Brazil before leaving. Then later came back to stay in Brazil and rebel.

There were no attempts for unification that is until Napoleon came along and intruded Italy. He created the Kingdom of Italy in the North. But when he was defeated Italy reverted back to independent states. This is how it was until the Revolutions of 1848 made its way across Europe in Milan and Venice. The revolutionaries rose up against the Austrians. During Italy's unification the three founding fathers were Mazzini, Cavour, and Garibaldi. In the beginning of the unification Italy's government was not stable. To stabilize the democracy they went to war to claim more land surrounding Italy.

German Austria was the most powerful state in the Roman empire. During the Napoleonic wars a German Confederation was formed. Though it was not effective of stopping the rivalry between Prussia and Austria. In 1833 the Persians formed a sovereign custom in which it gradually expanded and tied the economies of some German states together and away from Austria. The new empire Germany took Alsace Lorraine from French and went on to be the dominate power of Continental Europe.
