When I read scientific papers I start by reading the abstract. I then quickly skim the entire paper, and look at the figures and methods. I like to connect the figures and methods to each other before digging in. Once I have a semi good understanding of the figures and methods I read through the entire paper again truly annotating it.

I usually read through the paper twice. The first time I try to get a general understanding and following of the research being performed and the reasons why. The second time is usually done to get accurate description and knowledge of the methods and results, as well as figure interpretations.

Highlight any words that I’m unfamiliar with, talk about how the articke or a specific technique may be related to what I do, look at the in text references when I get confused.

Highlight key phrases and write notes on a separate sheet of paper. I google terms that are unfamiliar. I try to reread papers at least once. It's not always easy to be disciplined but if I start reading the paper earlier in the week and then come back to it another day this can help my understanding.

When I read a primary paper I go through the abstract first and try to understand the background, I will usually still need to search up a lot of terms throughout the reading to understand it.

I look for the problem the authors are trying to address. I look for their hypothesis, research questions and how they addressed those questions including the technique and the methodology they used. I also look out whether they were able to address their primary research question and what was their conclusion and discuss about their findings

I typically hop around a lot as opposed to reading straight through. I usually start by reading the abstract and intro, then the beginning of the discussion section, then the results with figures, then the rest of the discussion section, and then last go back and review the methods.

I like to skim the paper and then go back and dive into the figures to connect them to the article so I can better understand how the results led to the conclusions the authors made. Then I reread parts that I find connect to the figures to get a better idea of the methods and results.
