Ban on alcohol was started by "Dry" crusaders movement, led by rural protestants and social progressives in the democratic and republican party. To start out with this was already a hotly debated issue. Prominently prohibition led to Americas first "Gangsters" and organized crime. Bootleggers also surfaced during this time. Bootleggers sold alcohol, which was illegal to sell during prohibition so they were criminals. Although prohibition did prove improve less violence men had towards their family and they saved more money. Even with this people thought the government had no right to interfere with their lives.

Why is Prohibition important?

Prohibition resulted in a 30% drop in alcohol consumption,

and a decline in alcohol related arrest. It is also important because it shows how banning something can backfire. Over time both crime and alcoholism increased as people learned how to get around the law. and With prohibition the desire for alcohol went up because it wasn't easily accessible anymore.

Prohibition had a huge impact on history. The eighteenth amendment banned the sale, production

and transportation of intoxicating liquors. This was on of the first times the government sort of

interfered into peoples lives. During this time America's first gangsters really appeared. One of the big

impacts was that the amendments advocates were surprised by how much disobedience there was. People

who could afford it would spend a lot of time in speakeasies. Also most city officials turned the other way

during this time period. Most city officials could just be bought off. The cities said that if the government

wanted this amendment then they can enforce it too. There were also some upsides to prohibition. A lot of

liver related deaths decreased, more families were happy because the husband wasn't out drinking, and

communities in general became safer places.
