Climate change issue has been one of the hottest topics in US presidential elections in recent years (Ji & Chen, 2016, p127). The appropriate proposals and responses to climate change issues made by election candidates are an essential way to gain voters' support and achieve election goals. In the current Western democracy, there is little direct interaction between voters and candidates, and the media has become a bridge connecting voters and candidates (Ji & Chen, 2016, p128). In this light, studying how the media report on climate change is important for studying the media agenda setting in political campaigns. This paper selects the New York Times as the target media, uses the keyword "climate change" and the news theme “climate change” to search the media coverage of climate change in the New York Times from February 1 to September 30, 2020, and uses content analysis to study the main groups of news sources, the relationship between the time and quantity of news reports, as well as the attitude and discourse bias of different political parties in the face of climate change by studying the tone and framework of news.

Content analysis is one of the most widely used social science research method and a large number of empirical studies are based on this method for data collection and processing (Hui & Li, 2011). Berelson (1952) believes that content analysis is an objective, systematic and quantitative method to describe the explicit communication content. Babbie（2015）thinks that content analysis is the study of recorded human media, including books, magazines and newspapers. It can also answer the classic question of media research: "who said what, to whom, why, how, and what impact was stated?" This study focuses on a newspaper which is a form of media, so the content analysis is the most suitable methodology for the research. By using content analysis method to both qualitatively and quantitatively analyze the relevant variables of the news report, such as news source, reporting time, reporting tone and news frame, the research questions can be solved.
