Unfortunately, students fail to read the whole word problem. They do not have the stamina or patience to break up the word problems and understand the background in relation to a real-world situation to help them distinguish what operation need to be done. Throw in multi-step operations and students are so confused that they shut down.

Many of my students misinterpret what exactly the question is asking them, especially my ESOL students. They may also pay too much attention to the minor details of the word problem. I think the wording of the word problems is what makes them fearful.
