One of the biggest challenges Native American students face in education today is such a low graduation rate. Because these students value the community more than their education, we can integrate the community into the classroom to hopefully increase the focus on school. As a result, this could increase attendance rates and eventually lead to elevated graduation rates.

A major challenge Is the issue of attendance. The students are unable to learn if they are not inside the classroom. Although I respect that the students are tightly knit with their families and their respective community, they need to come to school. I would suggest having a meeting with parents, faculty, teachers and students about the issue of attendance. This meeting would also serve as a great way to learn more about the Native American culture and perhaps have some of the students perform a traditional ritual.

Zack Sprunger
I would say that the biggest challenge that Native Americans face in the classroom is that they are often forgotten in classes such as history. It is so easy to brush off that unit because it makes students and the teacher feel uncomfortable. This is actually good and no reason why it shouldn't be taught. Social Studies teachers need to be proactive about teaching this when it comes around because it is an important part of out history.
