How does the loss of innocence affect a person?

It was a tragedy that struck the nation, especially the Lindbergh family. On March 1, 1932, the famous aviator Charles Lindbergh's baby was kidnapped. Charles was "endeared to the public and he soon became one of the most popular people in the world" (Schwartz) due to his solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. This sparked more press coverage and the nation was curious in who would do something so horrific. "On May 12, a renewed search of the area near the Lindbergh mansion turned up the baby's body... he had been killed the night of the kidnapping and was found less than a mile from the home" (History). The loss of their beloved child caused the Lindbergh family to end up donating their home to charity and moving away.

After the Lindbergh baby was found dead. Many believed and accused that Charles Lindbergh did this as a way to get attention and when they did not get what they were promised, killed the baby. “Some believe that Lindbergh orchestrated the kidnapping as a publicity stunt and that after the hired kidnappers didn’t get whatever it was Lindbergh had promised them, the stunt went horribly wrong” (Serena).
Instead of trying to comfort and support the grieving family, they turn around and blame them for the kidnapping. This may be because the Lindbergh case occurred during the Great Depression where times were hard for everyone. And the wealthy's problems seem so insignificant compared to their's.

When someone loses their innocence. Is it really losing innocence or gaining experience?

When someone loses their innocence, whether it be the loss of a child or ignorance, it's a gaining experience. The kidnapping of the Lindbergh baby was a gaining experience for the nation, "the crime captured the attention of the entire nation" (History). This horrific event shocked families around the nation and due to this parents were more cautious of their children. Following the Lindbergh kidnapping and murder of the baby, the United States Congress adopted a federal kidnapping statute, known as the Lindbergh Law. The Lindbergh Act makes it a crime to kidnap for ransom and reward. The Lindbergh baby kidnapping was a national tragedy, but opened eyes to everyone and made them more aware of events that could be similar to this in the future.
