It can be background information about the general topics of the speech (racism, racial injustice, civil rights, leadership, etc). His story at the end is a last appeal to pathos. The story itself is not a great story, but it is the way he tells it that makes it a great appeal to emotions. He speeds up, slows down, emphasizes different words. He doesn't just tell you that Ashley sat at a round conference table and at the end of the meeting an older black gentleman agreed with her.
