I chose this diagram because it represents that how students need all five components of literacy to become strong readers. I intend to utilize this diagram in my classroom to show students how important each component of literacy is for them to succeed in reading. Using the pillars as an illustration shows the strength of all pillars holding up literacy. This can represent the need of all five pillars in order to have success in reading comprehension. If you struggle in one, then you will not be successful in comprehension because you need all pillars to build on.

I chose colored reading bins because it shows organization my classroom. The books can be separated by themes or reading levels so that students may discover books that they are interested in. Allowing students to browse and skim through to find their own books also give them a sense of independence for their reading choices. With the structure of the bins students are able to easily find books that contain their interests that are at their reading levels.

I chose the book Charlotte's Web as my chapter book for my selected age group. I chose Charlotte's Web because it contains life lessons to the point that 3rd graders can understand and relate to. The central theme of Charlotte's Web is friendship, where Charlotte and the pig, Wilbur, show what true friendship looks like and how a friend can go to extreme lengths for another friend to help them. It is important for the 3rd graders to learn about friendship because they are developing good social skills and building a positive self-esteem. Learning about true friendship and what it looks like will help them understand and develop a positive environment for themselves.

I chose the picture book Those Shoes because it is a story about wants and needs. The story is about a boy who desperately wants a pair of trendy tennis shoes but his family is unable to afford them. The book contains concepts of empathy and understanding, knowing what you truly need. During 3rd grade, students are starting to notice differences in one another, they understand brand names versus generic, they feel the need to fit in. Reading this book portrays a positive message about ensuing kindness and selflessness, instead of judgement and envy. It is important for students to understand that actions can have a greater impact than items in someone's life.

Graphic organizers allow the students to identify information from the text like the main ideas, purpose, connections between characters, and supporting details. Not only do graphic organizers benefit the students but the teachers can also use them to assess students understanding of the text and reading comprehension skills.

I chose this sound wall because it demonstrates how to say our vowels and out constants. I love the way this wall shows how we move our mouths to create the sound for each vowel and constant. Looking at vowel valley the students can understand the differences in long vowels and short vowels as well as diphthongs. I like as this wall also includes the constants, the students can understand where the sounds are coming from within your mouth.

I chose this reading assessment from teachers pay teachers website that includes sequencing, cause and effect, compare and contrast, main idea, key details, theme, inferencing, point of view, and problem and solution. I found this reading assessment to be crucial in gathering an understand for what concepts my students understand and areas that they may struggle in. By 3rd grade, students know how to read and are working on their understanding of text. They should be able or working on looking at a text and answering questions that involve each category I stated above. Reading comprehension is a critical point for 3rd graders and their academic development where they are now reading to learn instead of learning how to read.

I chose flocabulary as my reading tool for English language learners. Flocabulary is highly recommended for English language learners because it focuses on social/emotional learning, explicit vocabulary development, and current events. Explicit instruction is important for these students because it allows them to engage in the lesson and will increase their comprehension and understanding of texts read in and out of the classroom. Flocabulary does currently cost money in order to access it, but if my district/school did have the capabilities of utilizing it, I think it would be a top tool to help ELL students.

I picked this book because it provides a valuable lesson that 3rd graders can relate to and learn from. In this book, the author discusses challenges Abe Lincoln faced and how he valued his education. Abe Lincoln is a critical person in American history and is a positive role model for children. Witnessing Abe Lincoln's life through this book allows students to imitate his behavior and understand how valuable reading is in life. The students can tackle the deeper meaning of the story, identifying and discussing obstacles they have come across and over come in their lives so far.

I chose spelling tiles as my spelling resource for my classroom. Using letter tiles can allow my students to manipulate other letters and words. Having this gives them the ability to build a word on their own. This method is also beneficial for tactile and visual learners because they are able to move the letters themselves and visually watch the word being formed as they place the letters. Letter tiles also play a part in phonics by practicing their blending sounds and identifying phonic patterns. In the same sense, they can identify spelling patterns and errors when building words, and are able to fix those errors by rearranging the tiles.

For my research-backed literacy resource that I want to incorporate my classroom that we did not discuss in class are word riddles. Research shows that engagement activities like riddles, can reinforce students decoding and encoding skills, as well as their reading fluency. Word riddles is a fun interactive way to focus on phonics and patterns within words. With these riddles you can specifically target patterns, letter combinations, or phonic sounds. Students are also actively using their phonic awareness and orthographic tools to solve the riddles, associating sounds with letters.

I picked this book because its includes kids from various cultures and ethnicities displaying inclusivity and unity between the friends. Within the story, the children are in charge of the world, tackling global problems like hunger and poverty. The children came together and showed kindness and caring to society by sharing their own resources. For the students, they can picture themselves as the children and mimic their actions and positive attitude. The students learn about inclusivity and understanding the importance of it.

I chose this Main Idea and Details worksheet for my printing and writing resource. I find this worksheet beneficial for students because it keeps them organized with the information they are pulling out from the text. In order for students to writing a good, sufficient essay, they must be able to support their purpose/idea. Using these types of worksheets as practice will help students in future academics build flawless essays. These worksheets also build on their reading comprehension skills, expanding their understanding of the main idea, and analyzing the text in which they are reading. The students have to also keep their handwriting organized so they do not mix their details and their main ideas. This will also prepare them for state testing where they have to write out/print their essays by hand. Notice the worksheet does not have lines for students to write on so they must find a way for themselves to stay organized and neat on the paper.
