The concepts involved in this standard include the use of art vocabulary, the understanding that artists use their art to express personal ideas, the identification of themes from masters' works, the understanding of the elements of art (line, shapes, colors, textures, space, and value), and finally the understanding of the principles of design. One question I would ask a third grade class learning about visual art is how do artists work? I would ask them to try to think about the different types of art we have seen and what different materials get used to create each type of art piece. I would also ask them what makes a person an artist to try and guide them to seeing themselves as artists. I would ask them how mistakes in art can be fixed and what these mistakes teach us. I would ask them to look at an art piece and tell me what they think the artist was trying to convey or express.
