Effect- People thought that america was stupid for doing that but Alaska proved to provide natuaral recorces and gold.

One of Americas super powers was yellow journalism. Yellow journalism is what started the Spanish~American war. When the USS Maine was sunk, according to yellow journalism "Spain" sunk it. In reality, who knows! For us to declare war against Spain is huge! We have only declared war 5 times in history. Considering how many wars we've been in, that's not a lot at all! Although the Spanish~American war was a bad one, it helped us be the people that we are today.

We got involved in many countries. We got involved with Japan, Hawaii, and Alaska. First, William H. Seward bought Alaska from Russia for seven point two million dollars. Everyone said he shouldn't have done this because it was a "frozen wasteland." Soon, they found important minerals as Seward had hoped for. They found gold, timber, fur, and other minerals. This brought settlers and miners to the area. Next, we took over Hawaii because Americans saw they had good crops to farm like sugarcane. We used our power that we earned by planting sugarcane to force the king of Hawaii to sign a Constitution at gunpoint. Last, we wanted to get in the economic system with Japan. However, the island nation of Japan had isolated itself from the rest of the world for hundreds of years. Perry attempted to make a peace treaty with Japan, but he was unsuccessful. Perry returned later with seven warships and gifts to show the benefits with working with us. Japan finally opened trade with America.

Effect- We lost a lot of men.

One reason why we got involved in war was because of Yellow Journalism. We stretched the truth in the newspapers which caused people to dislike Spain. Another reason was the USS Maine. Spain exploded our boat causing two hundred sixty men to die. This made us want to fight back. Last reason was because of the De Lôme Letter. This was written by a Spanish minister and it stated that McKinley was a “weak and a bidder for the admiration of the crowd.”

What- When America won the war against Spain, Puerto Rico thought they would have freedom but America instead made it one of it's territories.
