In the sixteenth century, alcohol (called “spirits”) was used largely for medicinal purposes. At the beginning of the eighteenth century, the British parliament passed a law encouraging the use of grain for distilling spirits. Cheap spirits flooded the market and reached a peak in the mid-eighteenth century. In Britain, gin consumption reached 18 million gallons and alcoholism became widespread.

The nineteenth century brought a change in attitudes and the temperance movement began promoting the moderate use of alcohol—which ultimately became a push for total prohibition.

In 1920 the US passed a law prohibiting the manufacture, sale, import and export of intoxicating liquors. The illegal alcohol trade boomed and by 1933, the prohibition of alcohol was cancelled.

Today, an estimated 15 million Americans suffer from alcoholism and 40% of all car accident deaths in the US involve alcohol.

Drinking alcohol for fun, or binge drinking is not the right thing to do. People, mostly teenagers, love to drink and party which is dangerous when you're under the influence. Drinking can cause problems, health problems like; sleep disorders, increasing the chance to use another substance, memory loss, and other serious cases. Drinking is ok as long as you do not abuse it like most young adults do, 78% of teens consume alcohol.They feel as if binge drinking is no big deal when it really is. Teenagers who drink and drive will get a DUI, penalties may be suspension of license, community servive, payment of fines, edu programs, or all of the above. The legal age to drink in the U.S is 21, and the BAC limit is .08. Anything over this you will be charged.

All this information needs to be stressed because teens and young adults dont understand the risk of binge drinking. You always have freedom of choice, but not freedom of consequence. This info needs to be addressed all the time so people can understand the risk of drinking.
