Moreover, a shadow passed over George Hadley's face. The reader does not know what caused the shadow to form, it could have been a vulture, thus the feeling is also unfriendly. (Foreshadowing) Also, the fact that George and Lydia Hadley could hear the papery rustling of the vultures suggests they are close by, adding to the friendliness. Lastly, Lydia said "filthy creatures".
