Scene to direct - The Kharki Jacket

The reason I chose to direct this scene is because it mainly focuses on what as happened in the past. As a directer, I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to explore a non-naturalistic approach to the scene.

The scene itself, involves Janine and a school janitor. The school which they are in used to be Khafar Rayat (a prison). The janitor used to be guard at the prison and knew most of the inmates, the one in focus is the Woman Who Sings. During the scene Janine is asking the janitor a lot of questions to try and get answers. At first the janitor is very closed off and is not saying much. However, after a while, Janine is asking enough questions and the janitor realises that she is not just some sort of journalist, but someone looking for answers!

Idea of staging the scene

As I said earlier that I don't want to take a naturalistic approach to the scene but something that makes it more interesting.

Since the janitor starts to tell a story about the Woman Who Sings I wanted stills and sound effects to go with the story. For example, the janitor talks about Nawal getting raped. I wanted the sound effect of a woman screaming, over the top of the speech. I understand, that it may feel uncomfortable to watch for some audiences. However, for this kind of play, it needs to something rather quirky and different.

In terms of staging, I want a very small corner of the stage light up, to represent a janitor's cupboard. This is so when it's the only thing that is light up, it will draw in more attention from an audience perspective. Despite only having a certain corner light up, during some sections of the janitors speech, I would like some for of prop or even set to be light up to give the audience more of a physical representation of what the janitor is describing.

My approach towards Directing

As a person, I am incredibly laid back and therefore took a similar approach to directing. The first rehearsal was just a chat about what we thought the character's were trying to achieve in this scene and what they should be portrayed as. After this initial rehearsal, each rehearsal after this was just running through basic blocking (to begin with) and then gradually introducing extra bits as previously mentioned. During the end of the scene I decided to have Janine looking to the back of the seating back and saying her line towards that direction. The reason I decided ti di that was because she's still unraveling the mystery and looking outwards shows being alone and looking lots. At this point in time, this is how she feels emotinally.
