In December 1620 a small ship called the Mayflower arrived at present-day Massachusetts with a load of "Saints" and "Strangers" who didn't call themselves 'Pilgrims" (That label was added in the 18th century.) The "Saints" were the Separatists who wanted to separate from the Anglican Church because it bore too much resemblance to the corrupt Catholic Church. (King Henry VIII had not changed the doctrine of the Catholic Church when he split in the 1530s...he only allowed himself to divorce his wife, Catherine of Aragon, in order to marry the beautiful Anne Boleyn.) The Separatists had been living in Holland for several years by the time they decided their children were becoming too "Dutch." They left Leiden and sailed back to Plymouth, England to hire a ship and crew to take them to the New World so that they could worship without persecution.
Click on this link to find more amazing information about the people that we know today as "the Pilgrims!'

Life in the 17th century was perilous at best no matter where you made your home---in the Old World or the New! Death was never far from your mind if you were a colonist---death by illness, starvation, Indian attack, childbirth, injury--no matter how minor---and people were very in touch with their religion because they needed to be "right with God" since death could occur at any minute. About half the infants born died before age 5. Even so, colonists and people in general went about daily life-despite the harshness of their situations and the dangers that faced them by relying on their faith...which explains why religion and the church was at the center of their society.

It is impossible to characterize slavery in one way or to generalize anything basically about slavery except that it was totally inhumane. The nature of this "peculiar institution' as it was labeled in the South in the 19th century varied greatly from large plantation to small farm, from region to region and from owner to owner. Moreover, it is important to remember that most people in the South never owned enslaved people at all. AND only 5-9=8% of the total number of Africans kidnapped from Africa actually arrived in mainland British North America. The majority (about 95%) stayed in the Caribbean Islands and in Brazil on the sugar cane plantations where the life expectancy from arrival was 2 years because of the harsh working and living conditions and disease. Also the institution developed over time. In the 17th and 18th centuries, slavery was basically a means to an end---an answer to the labor shortage that existed particularly as indentured servitude disappeared throughout the first half of the 18th century.
