(King Henry VIII had not changed the doctrine of the Catholic Church when he split in the 1530s...he only allowed himself to divorce his wife, Catherine of Aragon, in order to marry the beautiful Anne Boleyn.)  The Separatists had been living in Holland for several years by the time they decided their children were becoming too "Dutch." They left Leiden and sailed back to Plymouth, England to hire a ship and crew to take them to the New World so that they could worship without persecution.

The nature of this "peculiar institution' as it was labeled in the South in the 19th century varied greatly from large plantation to small farm, from region to region and from owner to owner. Moreover, it is important to remember that most people in the South never owned enslaved people at all. AND only 5-9=8% of the total number of Africans kidnapped from Africa actually arrived in mainland British North America. The majority (about 95%) stayed in the Caribbean Islands and in Brazil on the sugar cane plantations where the life expectancy from arrival was 2 years because of the harsh working and living conditions and disease. Also the institution developed over time.
