There was a comment at the end of the documentary, “They lost faith in their leaders but realized their own power” that really resonated with me, because it proved that once they had united and worked together – they could put pressure on those oppressing them. Whilst it is known that many lost their lives fighting for their own rights, seeing the brutality, murder and unapologetic racism towards the minority was shocking – but it was even scarier when I made the connection that this is happening in present day America.

Those people who protested and stood up against the laws were resilient and courageous even though they knew change would not occur immediately. Their actions progressively changed the stereotypic image of 'coloured people', which eventually bought about equality.

Through watching the "eyes on the prize" documentary, I saw how much passion and aggression was brought out through the mistreatment of the coloured people in Jackson, Mississippi. People were willing to risk beating, arrests and even their lives in the hopes to one day make a change. The images and video clips of real events from back then were very powerful in the sense that they showed the reality of what happened to people back then which is such a drastic contrast to society today.
