Whilst it is known that many lost their lives fighting for their own rights, seeing the brutality, murder and unapologetic racism towards the minority was shocking – but it was even scarier when I made the connection that this is happening in present day America.

Those people who protested and stood up against the laws were resilient and courageous even though they knew change would not occur immediately. Their actions progressively changed the stereotypic image of 'coloured people', which eventually bought about equality.

In some counties, blacks outnumbered whites four to one, yet almost none of them were registered to vote. To register to vote in Mississippi, regulations were set. You needed to correctly answer several near-impossible questions to be able to vote.
This was so that they wouldn’t be able to vote and therefore no change would be made to the state.

People were willing to risk beating, arrests and even their lives in the hopes to one day make a change.
