When the children are making independent decisions from their parents, they are put down and forced to follow the rules of their parents. The motif of the box represents how the parents tried to create the identity of their children, rather than allowing them the freedom to discover themselves. The quote "And the door only opens one way" (Morrison) helps to show how the parents ideology is the only influence being given to these children. The children are not allowed to 'leave' their parents control and create their own journey and freedoms. To add, the box contains many physical objects that are things the children would love. This represents how many parents in this society attempt to reinforce their ideal behavior by giving gifts. However, the motif of the box shows that physical things can not take the place of individuality. At the end of the novel, the children break apart the box and reunite with the world.
