Greeks spend more than 80 minutes per day networking, as half of the population is registered on at least one social media platform.
YouTube, however, has reported the largest growth of all social media platforms.
According to data presented by Monitor, a platform that records publications from Greek news websites, blogs, forums and Greek users of social media in real time, Facebook’s increase in registered accounts is limited since most of the population already has an account. Facebook was enhanced by 1.1 million new accounts last month, reaching 6.7 million accounts in total.
One in three Greeks says that their “networking” consists of playing games, while the average time spent on social media websites between January and March of 2015 was calculated at 82.2 minutes per day.
The findings of various ongoing research studies show that active social media users comprise 50 percent of the population, while 55.2 percent have a registered account. A clear example of the rapid rise in usage is the photo- and video-sharing service Instagram, which now occupies 8 percent of the Greek social media market as opposed to last year’s 0.1 percent.

The main reason for the increase in usage of social media platforms has been found to be the significantly increasing penetration of the Internet, which constantly appears strengthened with the trends suggesting it will grow exponentially over the coming years. Accordingly, it is predicted that Greece will have an approximate 3.2 million Internet connections by the end of 2015. On a global scale, Internet connections from 2000 to 2015 have increased sevenfold, reaching 43 percent of the world’s population in comparison with 6.5 percent in 2000.

The increased accessibility of the web from mobile devices and the increase in demand for video services has led multinational tech firm Cisco to the assumption that the distribution of data will triple by 2019. Furthermore, it estimates that video-sharing websites will dominate the web, as they will assume 80 percent of the data distribution network worldwide. In the meantime, it is expected that the average data transferring speed will be 10 times faster, reaching 42.2 megabits per second. Correspondingly, the connection speed between devices is estimated to become at least three times faster.

Greeks now use the Internet in many aspects of their everyday lives, such as grocery shopping. According to the Electronic Business Research Center of the Athens University of Economics and Business, six out of 10 consumers are expected to increase the value of their online purchases within 2015. At the same time, it has been calculated that the value of online supermarkets in Greece will reach 383 million euros by 2020, according to evidence presented by Convert Group e-Business Consulting.
Source: http://www.ekathimerini.com/201228/article/ekathimerini/community/half-of-greeks-engage-in-social-media

It is a factual movie that talks about Greek society and how they value family life. The most important thing for them is woman should marry from a Greek man and have a lot of children and do home works. They are sociable and they keep their relations with their family members; beside they enjoy spending time with their relatives and have parties with popular Greek dishes. Further more, they are proud of everything belongs to their culture, tradition and heritage. They believe that everything in the world origins from Greek and there is a gap between them and the rest of world for example; they cannot accept or understand others easily. The story of the movie is about unmarried Greek woman in her middle age living with her very Greek parents. She is not beautiful or a sociable person or a typical Greek woman. Most of her similar aged relatives are married to Greek man and have many children’s, therefore she breaks the rules of her society love and marry to a non-Greek man after having the acceptance of her family. She tries to build herself and her career and to not be same as others.

There are many sectors of society included in the movie in public or private or social levels such as:

- Family:
They have large extended families with many relatives who spend time together.

- Religion:
They are very religious people and they go to church in their holidays and for important rituals like weddings.

- Art:
They have the sense of art in the movie the family members were designing the wedding cards, flowers, drawing and doing other things by their own.

- Private business:
Since they are living in Chicago the family owns a small restaurant run by them that serve Greek foods.

- Education:
language and knowing Greek words is important for them so they were sending their children’s to both American and Greek schools to learn and never forget their identity.

The gender roles in Greek society are that women should marry at a young age from a Greek man, have many children's, work inside the home and take care of her family, while men should have a job outside the home.

There was a challenge for stereotypes in the movie for example: everyone think that all Greek members think and do the same, therefore all of woman in Greek marry at a young age from a Greek man and work in the home and raise their children’s but in the movie I saw that the heroine “ Toula” she fails at being a typical Greek woman and fall in love and marry someone outside her society.

There are many stereotypes in the movie raised by media that Greek people are loud, noisy and talk a lot. They are sociable because they consists of close-knit which means they have many relatives who join and share everything and have a lot of parties together. They believe that everything is belongs to them and their heritage and don’t accept other people or understand other cultures and traditions easily.

Director: Joel Zwick.

Writer: Nia Vardalos and she the heroine.

Stars: Nia Vardalos, John Corbett.

Production companies:

- Gold Circle Films.
- HBO Films.
- MPH Entertainment.
- Playtone

References:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0259446/

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Big_Fat_Greek_Wedding

http://www.novinite.com/articles/115027/Greek+Culture+and+Traditions+-+Where+the+West+Meets+the+East

https://www.movieposter.com/poster/MPW-33463/My_Big_Fat_Greek_Wedding.html

Globalization has a huge impact on the media in Greece. The revolution of Internet and the coming of social media opened the door for Greeks to share their cultures, tradition and the beauty of country to the rest of world to encourage tourism. As a part of globalization for instance: we know that the American guy Kevin Systrom created instagram and other social media accounts created by others from different countries, Therefore people worldwide are using the same application which means that Globalization made the world one place.

The examples show that they are using social media accounts to encourage tourism by showing visual photos and videos and communicating easily with people.

References:

1. http://www.ekathimerini.com/201228/article/ekathimerini/community/half-of-greeks-engage-in-social-media
2. https://twitter.com/hashtag/greece?vertical=default&lang=ar
3. https://www.instagram.com/visitgreecegr/
4. http://www.voanews.com/a/refugee-children-begin-attending-greek-schools/3544676.html
