*Article* What is White Privilege, Really -Cory Collins

A lot of people don't see white privilege for what it really is or they think it isn't actually real. However, it is very real. When I think about white privilege I think about feeling truly safe. We don't have to fear for our lives every time we see a police officer. Yes, white privilege is real but there is a difference between white privilege and racism. Things are taken for granted everyday. That is white privilege. Things like, finding the right makeup shade, the perfect nude color, skincare suitable for skin types, and products suitable for hair types. Racism is the blatant disrespect and personal attacks against people based on their skin tone. We go through our day to day lives not even noticing what is going on around us. Whites are so blind to this idea of white privilege because we believe equality is so important yet, we are so focused in on the broader equality that no one goes in deeper to see the truth. White privilege is a perfect example of how issues with racism have gotten so much better, however with this many new problems are surfacing.

It was not until Adichie had gone to America that she realized or precessed that she was African American. The same way Janie didn't realize it until she was around all of the white kids. They were so used to fitting in that they didn't even notice skin color. It wasn't until someone would bring up Africa and everyone would turn to her, that she began to see the difference in how she was treated. She had such a happy life and childhood. She had a very close family. However, people in her family and even her friends died due to things most Americans don't have to worry about. Things like refugee camps, inadequate healthcare, no water in fire trucks, etc..

*Poem/Video* Gate A-4 -Naomi Shihab

This poem allowed me to understand the true improvements in the world today regarding racism. Back in the day, If a situation like that had occurred it would have been very rare for that woman to get help, however that day at gate A-4 she was helped almost instantly. She was able to speak to someone in the language she knows how and she helped her to calm down. She went out of her way in order to help this lady. Also, all of the women at this gate shared the cookies of the Arabic woman. This shows the unity that has been formed in this country. If racism had not improved, no one would have helped that lady, would not have sat with her for hours, shared food with her, and many other things that they did.

*Slam Poetry* Black Women Steps up to Mic -Sha’Condria Sibley

This poem was very powerful. It really made me connect her story to Janie's in Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora N. Hurston. It made me think of the way Jody beat down on Janie, telling her she was worth nothing more than her beauty. He treated her like she was stupid, that everything she said or thought was just point blank wrong. This woman is finding her voice, using what everyone says that hurts as motivation to inspire other women. She is using her voice for women who can't or are too afraid to use their own. We may have evolved with the treatment of women, but we still have a long way, just like with racism. We are making many improvements to achieve equality, however we have a long way to go.

The statistics show the true side of every story. Racism in America still exists today. Like I keep saying, equality has certainly improved, but we still have a long way to go. Studies and data have proven that it is 35% more likely for a police officer to use unnecessary force on someone of color versus someone who is white. Studies have also concluded that the majority of African Americans are exposed to slurs and/or have been a perfect target for bullying. Another thing they surveyed was how many colored people have ever experienced someone being afraid of them. The worst part is, the richer the person gets, the more afraid they are of just another human.

It is absolutely horrifying to hear that people still support never mind participate in Blackface. Blackface was a big comedy bit back in 1830. White men would paint their face black and act how they believed people of color would act as a family. I fully believed that the time of Blackface was over. I was utterly disappointed when I found out people are still participating and supporting this kind of so called "entertainment." However, I believe that it is far more uncommon than it used to be. Blackface used to be a major form of entertainment and now it isn't something that gets talked about all that much.

This story is all about the things women are supposed to balance. It is believed that women are in charge of everything related to house work. Everything listed in this short story are things stereotypical women should know how to do or how to fix. This really was how it went back in the day. Women were expected to stay home all day and do chores while their husband was out making money for their family. Nowadays, around 40% of American families have a mother who works and a stay at home dad. Also, about 75% of American families have mothers and fathers who work. This just proves that women are so strong they are able to balance full-time jobs and still take care of the things going on around them. We have made major improvements for equality for women, and it is only going up from here.

This image shows women on Women's Equality Day protesting the "War on Women's Rights." These are women fighting for proper healthcare for themselves. They are also fighting for proper child care. These are the things women should be fighting for. Personally, I think that some women can get very carried away with fighting for equality. It almost seems like they are arguing that we should be treated better. However, things like proper healthcare are the things that we should be standing up for. We need to fight for our rights the way Janie did with Jody. She was able to live life how she wanted to, as an equal. She did not believe she was better than anyone else, but she also did not believe she was less than anyone else.

This article talks about how we need to start speaking up about sexism so females can life a fair and equal life. It touches on a few of the same topics as the picture Demonstrators protest “War on Women's rights” in Los Angeles. This site however, gives a positive look on things. It is more of a helpful guide. The author is using personal experiences and stories to help give some understanding. This has me believing that we have made much more progress than I had originally thought

This poem signifies someone breaking away from the harsh hold the society has on them. It really reminds me of Janie finding the strength to stand up for herself and fight for equality. She finally had enough of "her wings being clipped," it was time for her to fly. I think that most women have improved on that piece. Most women are not afraid to fight for themselves. That has definitely been one of the biggest improvements in the women's right category. We all need to come together, speak up, and fight to not live a life like the lady does in Girl.
