Hands-On Activity: Constructing a rain garden.

Purpose of this activity is for students to create a rain garden to help the school community. Rain gardens help reduce mosquitoes from breeding, create a habitat for birds and butterflies, recharge groundwater, and reduce runoff water and flooding.

Content Standards
NGSS: Next Generation Science Standards

MS-LS2-5. Evaluate competing design solutions for maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem services. (Grades 6 - 8)

Students will work in small groups 3-4 students in coming-up with designs for a rain garden based on their own prior knowledge, experiences, and research.

MS-ESS3-3. Apply scientific principles to design a method for monitoring and minimizing a human impact on the environment. (Grades 6 - 8).

Students will first do experiments, small scale models, to see if their design is an effective model or not. Students will have the opportunity to make changes. We will discuss as class the effective method to create rain garden.

Math Common Core Standards
CCSS.Math.Content.6.NS.B.3
Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities. (Grade 6) .

CCSS.Math.Content.6.NS.B.3
Fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals using the standard algorithm for each operation. (Grade 6) .

CCSS.Math.Content.7.G.B.6
Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, volume and surface area of two- and three-dimensional objects composed of triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right prisms. (Grade 7).

For math students will record the date, time of day, temperature, humidity, and weather conditions on their worksheet. Students will record the materials and ratio used to create media mix combinations. They will then answer the question: Does media matter? Infiltration rates and storage capacities questions. This will tie-in with students prior knowledge of ratios and proportion in 6th and 7th grade math.

Is to encourage all students to become active citizens, real-world problem solvers, and nurture their interests, passions, and curiosities in STEM. I hope to create a welcoming inclusive environment where students feel their voice being heard, part of a team, valued, and see themselves as future leaders or world changers. I believe students who have curiosities how things work or have ideas how to make the world a better place. I hope to nurture these interest by giving students an opportunity after school to come together to work hands-on projects and activities. I also want to build student's self-esteem that they are capable building things, understanding STEM, and be contributing members of society.
