The current design of the utilized barriers are controversial since they are seen to be attached to the back of the driver. Not only that, but the design cause the barrier to flare out, as to separate the rider from the driver.

Now the problem that netizens and engineers have brought up is that this design of the barrier can cause an imbalance to the riders as the motorcycle is in motion. This is because the barrier would be perpendicular to the flow of wind and therefore, may throw the riders off balance due to wind resistance.

If we relate this to physics we can see that the air molecules act against the surface of the “shield”. This action is related to Newton’s third law of motion for every action there is a equal or opposite reaction. The action of the air molecules is that it is pushing against the surface of the shield. The reaction is that the shield also pushes against the air molecules. This gradually slows down the vehicle if the driver is not accelerating and is simply making the engine idle with the gears being at neutral. Another way to say this is through a special measurement called “drag coefficient”. This measurement measures the “streamline” of air that literally streamlines around a body and its resistance. The basic thing to know is that if you have a higher drag coefficient the more inefficient and resistant the body is to air and vice versa.

What makes this dangerous is that motorcycles have rear or mid mounted engines. Here in the Philippines most “motorcycles” are actually classified as scooters. Scooters use rear mounted engines to give the driver more legroom. This implies that the weight of the engine is shifted at the back of the vehicle. With the addition of a passenger at the back, it doubles the center of gravity which is now located at the back. The shield idea is very dangerous to apply to a motorcycle in this category since the shield acts as spoilers to increase drag. An analogy can be made with a plane that slows down. Upon landing, a plane has three main systems for slowing down such as: gear brakes, engine reverse trust and spoilers. What we will be relating here are the spoilers. Spoilers help in killing lift on a plane and helping the plane slow down using the directional force of the wind opposite to the plane’s direction. The spoiler’s force will push upon the plane causing a slight shift that makes the plane go up. Pilots compensate for this reaction by simply pushing the yoke or (main controller) down. This forces the plane down and remains at that position until the speed is low enough to make the spoilers cause less air turbulence. Going back to the motorcycle shield idea, those vehicles aren’t equipped with special tools that control pitch and vertical motion like an airplane. If we allow that shield (acting like a spoiler) to keep on spoiling the air along with all that weight at the back. The motorcycle could possibly flip over and cause injuries.

Once the motor is in motion, aerodynamic forces will increase and may exceed the drag and lift capacity of the vehicle, thus making it unsafe for both riders.
Even if the motorcycle chooses to move slower, vehicles nearby that are moving faster will still cause the motorcycle to have balance issues when they move past the slow moving motorcycle. With this, we are looking at an increase in accidents due to balance issues caused by the barriers.

But recently, it has shown that the use of these barriers have been very dangerous due to the aerodynamics of it.

"On highways where there are a lot of fast-moving vehicles, what we're afraid of is wind dragging and wind lifting as they call it. Even if you drive slow, if a faster vehicle like a bus or truck goes past you, you might have a problem with your handlebar. Your motorcycle will wiggle and you might even get into an accident," as one driver said.

To begin with, there are better alternatives to risking your lives by riding the motor cycle. Such as riding a car which already has it's own safety within the seatbelts and to be safe inside the car anyway with less contact.

When we look at vehicles today, the designs are slanted and smooth, the front is sharp as well to allow air to pass through without doing much to the moving vehicle, these were designed to minimize air drag, (drag is a type of air resistance which slows objects down) which allows vehicles to go faster. In the situation given to us, when the driver of the motorcycle wears this backpack shield and they speed up, then the "air resistance" or "drag" caused by the shield is also increasing so you can imagine that the driver of the motorcycle as they speed up on the highway will get pushed back and even get thrown off the motorcycle while the passenger on the other hand will get hit by the driver as well so this shield does more harm than good.

The barrier increases the air resistance of the motorcycle when in motion which affects the riders, but not only does it harm them but also the environment.

Because of air resistance, the drag the driver with the backpack shield creates on the road will also affect the speed at which the motorcycle goes, if they speed up then thats an increase in air resistance and that means they're not going as fast as the speedometer says they're going which means more fuel consumed and less distance travelled. This also contributes to the increase in vehicle emissions and air pollutants which affect the environment.

MANILA – An official of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Friday said he does not see any safety issues arising from putting a physical barrier between a motorcycle rider and the passenger.

“We do not see this as a possible safety concern. They (riders) just need to be careful because even if there are no physical barriers, accidents happen especially when they are riding motorcycles as compared to four-wheel vehicles," DILG spokesman and Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya said in Filipino in a Laging Handa public briefing.

Malaya said the design was checked by experts and the barrier is part of the design approved by the National Task Force (NTF) against Covid-19 in allowing the motorcycle back-riding for couples nationwide.

On Thursday, Senator Ramon 'Bong' Revilla Jr. bucked the measure saying the makeshift barrier between the motorcycle rider and the passenger might affect its balance, thus increasing the chance of accidents.

Angkas drivers are required to wear full body jumpsuits, gloves, face masks, and helmets. Since the driver is in full uniform with a mask and a helmet, and the passenger is most likely wearing a mask, the shield between the two is useless because it causes more complications than it solves problems. Since people still dislike the design and it has been proven to be kind of unsafe, the government needs to be able to come up with a more sustainable and safer way to use angkas or grab in transporting people. With this, we would be able to ensure that everyone is protected when riding. although, the national government will soon allow backriding in motorcycles and has tasked transportation agencies to draw up guidelines to keep the practice safe amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

As said in the articles, motorcycles have been carefully made, each part they put in has a specific purpose, so when you add an external device, there will be side effects. Like for the backpack-like shield, it can cause more drag and can cause damage while at the same time, back riding is already dangerous itself. There should be further study and research about the things that can be added when back riding because motorcycles where not exactly designed to to have that barrier.

Having a bulky shield barrier placed at the back of the riders raises concern on mainly two things: aerodynamics and balance. Motorcycles that usually travel in highways are expected to move fast and at the same time, are surrounded by fast trucks and cars. This causes problem for wind dragging and wind lifting. Drag is the force that opposes the motion of the object; strong winds acts against the big and wide surface of the barriers of the riders. Once the motor is in motion, aerodynamic forces will increase and may exceed the drag and lift capacity of the vehicle, thus making it unsafe for both riders. It makes it seem as if the motorcycle could be closer to a plane with all the drag and lift it could possibly get from the barrier angles at the right position. Even if the motorcycle chooses to move slower, vehicles nearby that are moving faster will still cause the motorcycle to have balance issues when they move past the moving motorcycle. There would possibly be an increase in accidents due to balance issues caused by the barriers.

As both the driver and passenger are already wearing masks and helmets, they are already unlikely to spread the virus if they are carriers. The different factors contributing to the different risks should be further analyzed and better solutions should come out, instead of simple, almost useless, solutions which appear to be just for show. Examples of better solutions include policies which require passengers to bring their own helmets or drivers to disinfect their motorcycles before and after every trip.

This can be fatal at high speeds when your adrenaline kicks in. Adrenaline will cause your heartbeat to double depending on your speed. This, in effect, will make you breathe faster and these masks will restrict your breathing and give your heart a hard time. Next, your brain will also suffer due to lack of oxygen until you blackout.”
One way that we can combat the virus without the use of the backrider barrier could be to integrate the features of a face mask onto a motorcycle helmet. For example, we can add the filtering ability of the face mask onto the jaw part of a full-face helmet.
