Spark Notes Summary

The Host wishes that his own wife were as patient as Melibee’s, and calls upon the Monk to tell the next tale. First he teases the Monk, pointing out that the Monk is clearly no poor cloisterer. The Monk takes it all in stride and tells a series of tragic falls, in which noble figures are brought low: Lucifer, Adam, Sampson, Hercules, Nebuchadnezzar, Belshazzar, Zenobia, Pedro of Castile, and down through the ages.

My Summary

The host asked the monk to share the next story and expresses his wish that his own wife will be as understanding as Melibee's. He starts by making fun of the Monk, pointing out that he is obviously not a poor cloisterer. Nobility such as Lucifer, Adam, Sampson, Hercules, Nebuchadnezzar, Belshazzar, Zenobia, Pedro of Castile, and others are brought low in this series of tragic falls related by the Monk.

The Monk's expensive way of life, preferring the expensive life style , and hating the rules a monk has to follow. The Monk is known for doing the opposite of what he is suppose to do. He ignored the rules and was a lair. One thing the Monk had a different appearance then a regular Monk. He appeared well-fed and how dressed, he didn't dress how a Monk was supposed to be dressed. A Monk is supposed to poor but this Monk isn't poor.
