After our introduction lesson, I’m very excited for this module! Not only is it interesting, but it has a heavy focus on practical elements which I enjoy. I’m looking forward to seeing what I can create in this module.

During the first week, me and my crew brainstormed a few ideas that we liked and developed a rough story line. Inspired by the Netflix series 'You', we came up with the idea of a creepy mystery about a boy who becomes infatuated with a girl and obsessively stalks her, without realising she was the one stalking him all along.

We have begun to create a rough first draft of our script! Before we started the script we created some character profiles for our two characters: Melissa and Charlie, and this has helped us to envision how our characters may act/talk.

In our crew we have started to discuss what roles we would each be interested in. Personally, I am interested in all aspects of production, however I think I might take the role of sound as I haven't had much experience doing that.

Practical Research

For my practical research, I booked out the sound equipment I would be using for filming, which included a Zoom H6, XLR cable, a pair of headphones, a boom pole, a shotgun microphone, and a pistol grip. I had a test run with the equipment, playing with the different levels on the Zoom, seeing how the sound from my TV was affected, looked at how the different mic positions sound e.t.c. Doing this research has helped me with filming our short film as it allowed me to speed up the process of setting up, as I was confident in what I was doing and knew how to get my equipment ready quickly so I was available to help the others with setting up if needed.

Voice recording studios

A lot of the script for our short film includes voice over from our two characters, almost like an internal monologue. At first we considered using the microphone I would be using for the filming sessions, but then I had the idea of booking out the voice acting studio to record the voice overs. This allowed the dialogue to sound more like you were in the characters head, and it came out clearer and more crisp than a regular mic. After a few rehearsals and some retries, I recorded some fantastic voice overs.

Whilst editing, I came across some problems with the lighting in some of the clips, for example the date scene. To combat this, I used the colour workspace on Adobe Premiere Pro to colour correct the clips I wanted to use - adjusting the settings until the lighting looks a bit more naturalistic and warm to add to the romantic vibe of the scene.
