Bliny is a type of Russian pancake that is used at most Russian celebrations. That’s what we Americans would call normal breakfast pancake, but for Russains its a popular tradition food. They are made like crepes but not exactly the same. Inside, they usually include: cheddar cheese, mushrooms, cabbage and more! They taste good with sour cream, jam and honey. Some bliny are actually made for dinner, as they are both an appetizer and dessert. We usually eat them folded, filled with the foods just named. They are easy enough to make and for children cooking, it is a good starting food.

Sirniki are small folded up pancakes that are filled with delicious foods like: cottage cheese. They are mostly eaten as a brunch appetizer, and are most like bliny. ‘Sir’ means cheese in Russian but it has nothing to do with the food.

Kasha is basically oatmeal but with some changes. Like there is mannaya kasha, grechnevaya kasha, and sanaya kasha. With all different types of Russian ingredients! Everyone can afford it, as there used to be many poors in Russia, as well as no money at all. Its healthy and easy to make, which is another first cooking children’s option.

Pelmeni are usually meat dumplings and come from Siberia. They are usually a healthy dinner choice which I would always choose over American chicken. They are easy to make and don’t take much time. They are also very good with a chunk of butter or some white sauce, I forget what it’s called.

Vareniki are pretty much the same as sirniki, although they are also pretty close to pelmeni. They make a delicious combination of these delicious foods, representing what you can mix together for a quick snack and grab them right off the plate. Vareniki are very healthy compared to sirniki, with meat, veggies and nothing much sweet. Not that they’re not tasty! Vareniki is not something you would complain about for dinner.

Pirog is just another way of saying pie in Russian, although it is WAY healthier than normal American pie. It has meat, veggies, cabbage, cheese, you name it! It’s like a type of Russian tacos!

Borscht is a stew, thick with vegetables, meat, cheese, anything! It’s a superthick pink stew, which is heavy when you stir it. It is as delicious as any soup or stew, but this is the thickest of all the Russain stews and soups!!! It is always cooked with beetroot and tomatoes. Extra thick stew, extra delicious.

Thank you for reading my social studies work!
Sincerely Ava Anikin and Julian Anikin

Bye Mrs. Beck and Miss. Coniglio! I hope you like our family Russian culture! Oladushki is also one of my favorites! BYE!

For a Greek tradition we do on New Year’s Eve, we bake a cake called “vassilopita”. It tastes like a regular cake with orange and spices in it. We decorate the top with a white soft sugar, gum drops, nuts and other decorations. It is special because we put a coin in it before we bake it. At midnight, we cut a slice of cake for each person in the family. The person who finds the coin in their piece is going to have a very lucky year (and it’s true!). I have found it two times but not this year.
