1820: Missouri Compromise

This event has political significance as it was when Congress tried resolving the conflict between the North and South which in truth solved nothing. Instead of trying to reunite each side, they made the decision to geographically separate the North and South by creating the 36'30 line. Making it so that the top of the line (North) would be completely free of slavery while the bottom of the line (South) would be the only territories that could have slaves. This ultimately led to a fragile compromise that only led to more conflict as both sides still fought over the issues of slavery, leading to division among sides.

1860: Lincoln's Election

I chose this event as its political and social significance led to the South to start seceding from the union and become the Confederate States. When election came for a new president the South hated Lincoln due to him being against the expansion of slavery, leading to them fearing the possibility that Lincoln may completely ban slavery if he were to become president. So when in 1860 he ended up winning the election and became president, it was the last straw for the South. With South Carolina (SC) being the first to secede, eventually the other Southern states followed and they all became the Confederacy.

1861-1865: The Telegram

I chose the Telegram because of its significance in technology as during the Civil War the North used it in the war which served as a massive advantage for them. For the time, it was perceived as revolutionary as it was previously impossible to bring messages through distances miles away in such a short time. Lincoln saw the use the telegram could have during the civil war to bring messages to armies quickly, using it throughout the war to communicate to his soldiers during the war and gain updates of how they were in a matter of seconds. The Confederacy in comparison would be far behind in their delivery of messages, not possessing a telegram of their own and using the manual method of having a messenger travel to the person and deliver the information, something that would often take days if not weeks to reach.

1861-1865: Minie Ball

It has technological significance because of how it was a deadly revolutionary advancement made during the Civil War. A bullet with range never seen at the time and efficiency to load over twice as any made previously. The bullets were so strong they led to devastating wounds that would pierce through their skin, the bullets possessing accuracy that was unmatched during the century. Throughout the Civil War it was made and used on both sides, and with the soldiers still having used traditional war tactics it led to a fatal combination that killed thousands on both sides. Leading to a shift in how armies fought during war over time, adjusting on how to fight against guns with such deadly speed and accuracy.

Due to its political and social significance, I chose this as the election led to large consequences which ultimately affected those of color very negatively. _____

1880: Jim Crow Laws

I chose this event as a result of its social significance because it was a collection of racist laws that the South made out of discrimination. Laws that targeted the blacks who many southern whites did not perceive as an equal, the Jim Crow Laws were made to give them as little power and freedom as possible. One such laws were ones that made it extremely difficult for African Americans to be able to vote, a literacy test that was highly biased. Claiming it to be a test to make illiterate people unable to vote, they gave white people tests that were extremely easy to pass while gave blacks tests extremely difficult. The laws ultimately affected the lives of many people of color in the South, resulting in it being severely difficult for them to live a life even close to a white person from education to career opportunities.

1865: KKK

It has social significance because of how it was a group of racist whites who used violence against the blacks. Initially a small group of people having a twisted form of fun by tormenting African Americans, it grew into a clan that last for several years. Torturing, kidnapping, or even murdering those they targeted, primarily targeting the blacks but would also target white allies of the African Americans. They lynched African Americans, planted burning crosses, and were noted for the white cloaks they wore which represented the Confederate ghosts they imitated.
