Will Smith contrasts this traditional action protagonist male with the expression of his emotion and a chiselled and hairless body

"The family" in the omega man represent communism during the Cold War. Communism was slowly taking over and Neville's hate towards the family represents America's fear of communism at the time. The movie was filmed at the peak of the Cold War while American soldiers were fighting in Vietnam. The family are slowly killing off the human race, this is a metaphor for communism taking over the world and it reached into people's fears at the time.
