With that being said, I grew up thinking my cousins were my siblings and my aunts and uncles were other parents to me. Family is everything and much like the Japanese culture, you represent your family in public. What you do, whether it be bad or good, brings honor or shame to your family. In Hawaii, many people refer to everyone, even strangers as aunty and uncle. It makes you feel at home and helps you feel the Aloha spirit. I lived in Japan for 18 months as apart of my mission, and this experience helped me see a whole different culture and people. The mannerisms they have and the way they tend to act in public or in a professional environment is very different from America. I was able to learn about myself as well and how to act respectful towards another culture, which was also the culture of my great-grandmother.
