Why I Listen

My earliest recollection of an album in my life is of the Beatles' "Yellow Submarine." That record, and its animated film counterpart, played a large part in sowing the seeds of my musical interest. Throughout middle school, I went through many phases of musical tastes, including the work of rapper Lil Wayne, classic rock band AC/DC, and 80's synthwave group Depeche Mode. Experiencing a wide variety of genres has helped me be a more open-minded listener, and has taught me to appreciate musical value. Music is like therapy for me. Through music, I'm able to engage my imagination and let my mind paint a pictures of atmospheres that couldn't exist in the physical realm. My favorite way to listen is while laying in my bed, with no outside noise. It is in this setting that I'm able to fully immerse myself in whatever I happen to be listening to at the moment; nothing gets smothered by the sounds of life outside of my headphones, and not even the most soft and subtle intro or fade-out goes unnoticed. As an introvert, music is what I hold dear as a means of escape or unwinding, and I'd give it up for almost nothing.

The score of a film plays a large part in how much I enjoy it. Nine Inch Nails founder Trent Reznor spends his time collaborating on movie scores these days, such as 2014's "Gone Girl." Very sinister style on this track.
