« Plastic, because plastic can be turned into cash, fast - by the kilo. White plastic is best, and that goes in one pile. » part one, chapter 1

This quote is for me interessant because in a kind of way, we are the actor of this kind of job. For me it relates to the theme of waste management. In our country there’s more and more trend to leave plastic, as the zero waste trend. The job of finding plastic to earn money is the opposite of what some of us trying to do. And for me, a girl which is 17 years old, firstly it looks like strange for children to work, but even worse if it is in those conditions, but also I am working in Mc Donald’s and it makes me thinks about how many wrappers, straws and napkins I gave to customer and that they’ve maybe never used. I don’t know where the waste went.

“With the right key you can bust the door wide open. Because nobody's going to open it for you.” Trash, part one, chapter 2

I think this quote describes a lot the the independence that street children need to take. They surely feel lonely. Even if I am not in the same situation, I like this quote because for me it’s a fact, autonomy is the key to success and happiness.

« I had expected cells, but all I saw was cages. They were on my left and right, and they were the type of cages you might put lions and tigers in, in an old-fashioned zoo. » Trash, part three, chapter 4

This quotes is about when Olivia and Gardo went in jail. For me it describes well the 4th chapter because this quote is emotional. It also shows how the conditions in jail in poor’s countries are, the comparison between prison and zoo is hard to hear for lector who never had imagined those treatments, it’s violent.

« We have since bought boats, and learned how to fish, and we can tell you the truth, for the lying is finished. We will fish for ever and live happy lives. That is our plan. » Chapter 6, part five

This passage conclude to a happy end, the quote shows about the determination the boys have together, and it’s a bit optimist. Even if it’s not the first thing I would have done with all this money, it’s a wise decision who shows they will stay the person they were, they are still authentic. And according to me, the way they split the money was something really generous and mature for their ages.

« Then Raphael came up next to me, crying out he was so happy - just shouting into the wind - and we held each other and howled » chapter 4, part five

Now we really see them as friend since a long time. As a lector we really understand that it’s an achievement for them, we are happy.

« And I was thinking all the time, What if, what if ? - till I couldn’t sleep. » Chapter 2, part four

I feel familiar to this question. It’s the famous question that you’re asking yourself when you feel in danger or you want to remaking the world. For him it’s much more the first option. According to a positive psychology I think the “if“ when you feel in danger is poison. It will gave us a useless fear. And fear don’t give force to everyone.

« We were safe, but right after we knew we wouldn’t be for long. » Chapter 3, part four

I think it describes well the actions of the book, the three boys aren’t safe anywhere and anytime. They always move on. The police always run after them.

It also make me think about karma, like they have stolen something even if we know that it’s for the good cause they always have bad experiences.

« And at that time the sky grew dark and Jesus cried out "it's accomplished"- and the curtain of the temple was rent in two, top of bottom - the earth quaked and the graves were opened and the saints were raised… » Chapter 4, part four

This passage is about the decoding of the Bible, I think it’s a good indice about the passage that need to be decode. And as a lector we can hope that, even if we aren’t christian, God will help them, it’s also speaking about the saints, so we could predict that someone is gonna help them.

“What does the country need right now? THREE THINGS: A revolution. Then a revolution. Then – when the dust has settled – a revolution." Chapter 7 part four

Through the book we discover that corruption is very present in some parts of the world and that we are very lucky in Switzerland. Poor countries are sometimes in dire need of revolutions.

“I learned perhaps more than any university could ever teach me. I learned that the world revolves around money. There are values and virtues and morals; there are relationships and trust and love---and all of that is important. Money, however, is more important and it is dripping all the time, like precious water. Some drink deep; others thirst. Without money, you shrivel and die. The absence of money is drought in which nothing can grow. Nobody knows the value of water until they've lived in a dry, dry place - like Behala. So many people, waiting for the rain.” Chapter 10, part three

This quote shows a lot about the education of street children, they learn by experience, I like this vision of life, for me there are two types of intelligence, the intelligence of knowledge and the intelligence that serves you in life. The first ones in the class are not always the most successful, you have to see the world and have experiences to succeed in life, in my opinion. They know that the world revolves around money, but they were born on the dark side of the earth.

During the night, the police came in Behala and arrest Raphael. His auntie screams and don’t understand why he’s arrested. In the car, the narrator, Raph, was really scary. The car stops and he was taken out of it. They ask him about the bag he found, with some violent methods. He lie and told them he hadn’t found the bag.

Those chapter shows the policemans methods that are illegal, and as a reader, we felt the inequality and we are revolted. The third chapter describes Raphael return to Behala and when he understood that he had been arrested because his auntie told the neighbours that found something and that was the only charge they had. The chapter is done with another narrator, Grace, who describes José Angelico at the request of Father Juilliard.

Rat, Gardo and Raph decided to go investing about the locker, they took a train. They choose Rat to open the locker while Gardo and Raphael stand as guard. In the locker the find a package. The parcel were contained a letter to Gabriel Olondriz. For me the chapter 6 shows how street children can be afraid and aren’t the gangsta I’ve seen in some movie. The second part of the book begin with a Father of Christ, Father Juilliard. He’s explaining the difficulties of street children to leave street to go to school. The three boys came to Father Juilliard to make research about Gabriel Olondriz.

They discovered together that the key was for a locket in central station. The day after, the policeman came again to ask them to find it, but nobody found anything, because Rat kept it in a hole. They understood how strong the police want the bag, and how much they were in danger.

A boy is describe in a rubbish-town named Behala, his name is Raphael Fernandes and he’s the narrator. He’s working as a dumpsite boy, and he’s associate with a boy named Gardo. In the second chapter they discover a wallet with an ID card of Jose Angelico, a map and a key. The day after, they were surprised to saw that the police had came in Behala, which doesn’t arrive often. The police paid some of the people working there to find the bag. Raph and Gardo understood they had something precious between their hands. So they’ve decided to go seeing their friend Rat, because no one will think to search there. Expecting to me, the danger the begin to take can make the story interesting.

Those chapter are often changing the narrator, firstly, it’s Olivia, a woman who work in Behala’s Mission school, and the boys came to saw her. She doesn’t really know that they want to see Gabriel because they would probably make link between the senator and him so they told him that Gardo want to visit his grandfather in prison. Father Juilliard knew more or less that they were lying so he prevented her. Gardo and Olivia were really chocked about what they saw in jail.

Gardo and Olivia understood that Olondriz had been put in prison because he had too many charges against Senator Zapanta. In fact he had discovered that the senator embezzled money of aid, hospital, schools,… Once again the theme of corruption is describe, I think corruption is a theme that make turn the story political. Gardo was sorry for his lie to Olivia. The boys also explained a little bit more about what they’ve discovered.

Because street children are in our imaginary bad. But with the books we are discovering that they have a social intelligence we wouldn't have had at their age. They have a great sense of justice, which is harder to acquire when you have everything you need when you want it. In the course of the book you really get the impression that the protagonists are adults in their heads.
