Social media platforms have allowed people to communicate and share information without borders. They have become more than just tools for communication, enabling users to stay up to date with people's lives. Social media has become irreplaceable due to its popularity. However, concerns have emerged regarding its impact on teenage mental health. As teenagers spend more time on social media, "so have rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide" (Hughes, the New York Times). They are exposed to "negative social comparison" (the Wall Street Journal, Wells), where they feel social pressure to compete for likes and followers. This pressure has led to body image concerns and feelings of inadequacy, particularly among teenage girls. Studies have shown that social media algorithms are designed to keep users engaged by showing them content that reinforces their biases, creating echo chambers. The lack of self-control on social media use can also lead to the development of unhealthy habits like poor time management and neglect of important aspects of life. These issues highlight the negative impact of social media on teenage mental health. To counter this problem, social media companies have defended themselves by arguing that the negative impact of social media research lacks reliable sources. However, research teams have contradicted this by stating that "social media companies are generally reluctant to share their data with researchers" (Orben, Nature). On the other hand, social media companies have partnered with nonprofits to protect teenagers' mental health. For example, Instagram launched the "Emotional Resilience" program to teach teenagers how to manage their emotions effectively. Therefore, it is imperative to take an approach to understand how social media affects teenagers' mental health, considering both the positive and negative impacts of social media use.

In the argument map, I have defined key terms to make sure that the readers understand the points of the arguments. Narrowing the age range into teenagers, it has been straightforward for me to focus on the mental health problems that they struggle with. Since the teenagers are the most active age group on social media, I have been able to point their conflicts within themselves or their peers. However, the counter argument claiming that no relationship exists between social media and well-being seems to lack supportive evidence. As mentioned in the background information, research teams have contradicted this by stating that social media companies are generally reluctant to share their data with researchers. Therefore, it is important for me to find accurate sources to support my arguments and deliver my message effectively to the readers. As I have addressed positive aspects of social media use for teens, I need to explore the sources that those aspects end up resulting in mental health issues. Although mental health issues that are addressed in the map are defined, I think that readers would confuse with the information. To figure out this problem, I will continue finding sources with detailed explanations and examples that clearly illustrate how social media use can lead to mental health problems among teenagers. Overall, mental health issues have the connections among themselves. For the next project, I plan to use a more cohesive approach to connect the different mental health issues that teenagers may face as a result of social media use. This will illustrate how various issues such as anxiety, depression, and cyberbullying can be interrelated and lead to a negative spiral of mental health problems.
