Seeing how learning to read was such an important part of the creation of this religion it only makes sense Malcolm would. In Islam, the first prophet Muhammad was told by the angel jibriaíeel to learn to read so he could recite a message and spread the word far and wide. Malcolm would also grab from studying Islam that God or Allah communicates through situations given to you, the way I see it he would grab the situations he's dealt with when losing his father and uncle to white men and being bullied into the position he was in currently in and form a message he assumed came from Allah... that message being that the white man could not be trusted and separation is the only option for peace.
