Definitely a challenge, I feel like my mentor teacher is a marigold. There are quite a few walnut trees in the 8th grade wing who I hear talking at lunch and they tend to be negative. I would say that 2 of the other teachers have some marigold qualities, like they speak well about their students and talk about ways that they want to improve instruction. Observing other teachers can be a good way to look for marigolds too

I feel like it can be really easy for personal prejudice to create a walnut tree, and teachers are bound to have biases about certain 'types' of students that feeds into the toxicity talked about in the article

Marigolds with promote equity and diversity in the school and classrooms while walnut trees will probably dismiss it and view it as a negative thing. Walnuts may feel like it is a punishment to them because they "don't like change"

Marigold teachers are important for equity and diversity because they encourage a community where people are able to be different and where their different strengths are seen. Walnut teachers put students and other teachers into boxes and don't see how people can grow, which is imperative to promote equity and diversity in the classroom.

Teachers who are generally happy dealing with students rather than teachers who seem like they want as little student contact as possible. I think that searching for teachers that are closer to their college education will be more likely to be a marigold because they are more likely to be involved in teaching for the benefit of the student.
